Start in SAFE mode first by repeatedly pressing F8 during the boot up.
Select just SAFE MODE and not any of the other options.
If it boots up OK then the chances are that a new driver or software installation is the cause and from safe mode you may want to UN-INSTALLor the offending driver and then ty to reboot.
New hardware can also cause similar issues and a quick check is to remove the hardware and try to boot. Iff the boot works then swap the hardware into another slot and if you have to move an existing card out of a slot to do that but boot up with just the moved card first to enable the drivers to catch up then shut down and fit the new card and try again.
If the problem persists you could if you are using windows 7 do a REPAIR install that will take care of many of these issues.
similar sorts of REPAIR installation are also possibe from XP and VISTA but can be a little more complex to do.

Hello,
Sounds like the machine would improve alot by getting its windows restore or reinstalled.
But first to get around this issue you could turn off the machine, then turn it on, before the windows logo comes, reapeatedly tap on F8 until advanced start up options show up on the screen, scroll with the arrow keys to the SAFE MODE option and press ENTER.
A bunch of lines / text appear on the screen, just wait around 5 minutes and the computer starts up, sign in to the computer with your account, if it gets stuck again, then restart and repeat the above, just this time select the ADMINISTRATOR user account from the screen, that one should log in just fine.
Now create a new user account from start -> control panel -> user accounts.
make sure the new user is a system adminstrator
Then restart the computer normally sign in to this new user, does everything work OK?
Hi,
Just create a new user account, the problem seems to be something the laptop tries to load when you sign in to your old one.
You will have all your files in the hard drive still, but you need to find and move them over to your new account if that solves the problem in the login screen.
Press Start -> control panel -> user accounts. you can create a new user account there.
Short video shows how:
Yes, unfortunately the problem with your account will not let us use the old account, so we have to start over with a new account.
Yes the icons are gone, but EVERYTHING is still on the computer, you just need to copy or move the shortcuts into your desktop again. And move your files from the old users documents to your new user.
To find your old users shortcuts and files go to My computer, then C drive, then Documents and settings, Now select the old user. Inside you will find DESKTOP folder which contains all desktop items. My documents folder contains all my documents folder contents and so on, you can move these items to your new users desktop for example.
It will take a bit of getting used to and setting up again. But it solves the problem.
When you have all your files and icons back, you may go to control panel and user accounts and then delete the old account. But before you do that make sure you have moved everything that account had into this new account so there wont be any problems with lost items.
The old user is the username of your old - previous account.
well unfortunately there is no quick fix for that one, if we just copied everything from the old user to the new one, it would not let you sign in again.
Its starting to sound a bit like the laptop might have a faulty hard drive. Hold down the windows key and press R, write CHKDSK /F /X /R /B C:
Note space before each / mark and on /B C: there is a space in between.
you will get a message about can't be done, would you like to perform this next time the computer is started write Y and press enter if it doesn't move along on its own, then just restart the computer .it will scan and attempt to repair any disc problems.
Please run the disc check, you could not have had it run so fast.
Click start, then run, then write chkdsk /B C:
make sure there is a space after K in between of / and then a space after B in between of C. and then a : mark
Okay, I would recommend that you take the laptop to a local professional who can set it up for you and test the laptop if its still in good condition or if parts need to be replaced (hard drive) Or if its just in need of a fresh windows install.
I don't think you will get much better assistance from other people but sure do try.
