Good luck and don't forget to vote.
Looked at instructions, but couldn't find anything that addresses changing the internal battery that runs the stopwatch-not the AA's that operate the printer. Thanks
The stop-watch battery is a CR2032 disc type battery and is located inside the stop watch. You will need to remove four small screws that are visible on the back of the watch, and three more that are under the printer batteries (the four AA battery's under the battery cover).
Carefully remove the back cover (you will need to have the printer paper cover open). The printer may come lose so be careful it does not frop out. The paper feed button and the slide swtiches on the side may also come lose so be careful not to loose them. The top will not come completely away from the base as it will be attached by electronic tape.
Simply slide the old battery, and slide a new one it, making sure to keep the polarity correct.
Carefully reassemble your stopwatch and you're done.
You may need to re-set the watch by connecting the "AC" to the "+" with a piece of wire or a paperclip

You say the internal battery is new. Did you replace it yourself? If so, did you reset the device by shorting across the AC and + connections as detailed on the inside of the back cover? If not, I would start there. If you did, I would then suggest taking it back apart and cleaning the contacts of the Start button. Just use some rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab.
Both the internal battery and the 4 alkaline batteries are new. I just can't get the stopwatch to start, the start button doesn't do anything.
