I just got a Toshiba Satellite C650. The Touchpad is driving me nuts! I did something, have no idea what, and now everything on the page is so small I can't even read it. I can not figure out how to make the page big again. Some sort of spinning motion? I don't know.... Please help?!

The touch pad is duel touch, i.e. you can use two fingers to zoom in and out. Put 2 fingers on it and then move them apart to zoom in. Move them closer to zoom out

Toshiba satelite works one day ,not the next

Groan?

Cooling fan, or harddrive.

Only two movable parts, besides the optical drive. (CD/DVD drive)

I suspect the cooling fan. Why?
Inside your laptop is a Processor. It, like the other hardware components inside, are cooled by air. That little fan is all that pushes air through the laptop.

Here, let me use a Toshiba Satellite C650 series of Notebook PC, as an example,

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-C650-C655/disassemble-toshiba-laptop-3.htm

Scroll the page down, click on the photo next to Step 22.
Here you see the TOP of the cooling fan.

Close the photo. Scroll the page down, and click on the photo next to Step 24.

Fan Assembly removed.

That fan sits in bronze bushings. The bushings look like thick tubes, and the fan's shaft sits in those bushings. (One one top, one on bottom)

After time the bushings wear out. This allows the fan to c-ock over to one side. Plus makes a groaning sound.

Solution?
Replace the Fan Assembly.

One example,

http://www.laptopking.com/kingpartdetails.asp?ref=1443&category=fan

Now, am I stating that THIS is the problem?
NO.
I am stating this is the first place to start.

If the laptop is dirty inside, it is almost a sure bet that this is the problem.

Why?
Because if the fan bearings are dry, and worn out, the fan will not operate as it should. It will spin slower than it should, and may have periods where it just stops altogether.

This allows the Processor to overheat. When a Processor overheats it turns off. (BIOS turns it off)
This is a fail safe feature built-in. Keeps the Processor from burning up.

No Processor operating, no computer.

Want to replace the Fan Assembly yourself? No prob! Doesn't take a rocket scientist. (Sorry Gort)
HOWEVER, there is a PROPER procedure. Post back in a Comment, that you want to replace it yourself, and I will guide you.

{Plus you will be cleaning out the inside of that laptop }

joecoolvette

How do I replace the keyboard?

next to the F1 key and the windows key (2nd upper key and second to last key) are two screws, usually under some covering. unscrew and lift top edge of the keyboard towards the trackpad to lay face down. Undo the wire ribbon by lifting the grey or brown tabs and remove ribbon and keyboard. Then install the new keyboard by inserting the ribbon on the place. Lock down with the tabs and put the plastic prongs (close to the space bar) into the laptop body first, and then close keyboard onto the final position. screw back in and thats all. Synaptics touchpad not working

Have you looked at the Device Manager to see if there's a problem with the touchpad?

Start -> Control Panel -> System -> click on Hardware tab -> click on Device Manager button. Do you see anything that indicates a problem with the touchpad?

Also, you might want to check the BIOS to see that the touchpad is still enabled. I doubt that this setting would have changed, but it's worth checking. When you boot the computer you should see a message that says something like: "To enter setup press XXX" where XXX is the delete key or some other key. Once you're in the BIOS poke around to see if you can find the settings for the Touchpad. Different manufacturers use different BIOS' so I cannot tell you exactly where to look.

Good luck.
