I use a VOIP line and get the same error msg. Here's what I do- I dial the fax number with the line unplugged (hence no off-hook message), press "start Fax", and as soon as I hear the fax machine "Click" to pickup the line, I put the line in the machine. Works every time!

Sounds like a good solution stljeffjohns, but that's not a permanent solutions and sounds like a lot of trouble. Try to look for the solution in the HP Officejet Pro L7780 Manual

Off the hook

A "Phone Off Hook" message is not an error. It simply indicates that a telephone receiver isoff the hook(the handset is lifted) and the telephone line is open. This message would be expected in the following situations:
  • A modem on the phone line is accessing the Internet.
  • A phone connected to the HP fax (or the same phone line) is using the line, or the handset has been lifted.
  • A credit card machine is using the phone line.
  • Another electronic device is using the phone line.
  • The Start Fax button was pressed with no telephone number entered. Pressing Stop or Cancel should return the display to a ready state.
When the other device is no longer using the phone line, the display should revert to the normal message.
Lets try the following,
Disconnect the phone cable from the back of the HP product and the message should clear. If the message does not clear, unplug the power cable from the back of the unit, wait 15 seconds, and then plug in the power cable.
if issue still exists try the followign
Disconnect the phone cable from the HP product and connect it to a single line phone. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone. If no dial tone is present, replace the phone cable. If a dial tone is still not present, a problem exists with the phone system.

How to hook up fax on HP C7280

The C7280 can be used as a stand-alone fax machine. All you need to hook up to the printer is a telephone line. Connect the phone line to the jack marked "1-Line" on the rear panel, below the power supply connector. If you want, you can connect an extension phone to the jack marked "2-Ext". The line connection is for a standard telephone line. Once the line is connected, faxing is pretty much the same as it is on any fax machine. Put your documents face up in the feeder on top, or for a single sheet, face down on the scanner glass. Press the "Fax menu" button on the control panel and you'll be asked for the number. Enter the number from the keypad and then press the "Start fax black" or "Start fax color" color button to send the fax. Other than the phone line, there isn't anything else you need to hook up.

You can download the manual from HP if you need it for reference. It explains how to use the special features of the fax machine, like broadcast faxing, memory dialing, printing fax reports, etc.

How do i stop the phone going through to the fax machine if you dont answer it after 5 rings, we have the same phone and fax number and if you dont get to the phone in time it will go to the fax. as we are...

Go to an electronics store (Radio Shack) and buy a spliter. They sell a spliter that recognizes the call as a fax or phone call and sends signal to proper line. When you hook up the unit you will have your line in, then the outputs will be marked one to the fax and one to your phone. Once you install this your problem will be solved. You only have to hook one at at the fax machine not at all phone jacks.

Off hook message

Make sure you are plugged into the LINE port and you are not sharing the phone line with a computer.

6210 all in one printer

Phone off hook means to say that the printer is connected to a fax line and the fax line is in use. That message won't disappear until you disconnect the phone cable on the printer or no one is using the line for fax.

Fax problem

unplug the fax from the phone line. call it from you cell.if you hear your phones ringing in the house, plug the fax machine back into the jack. [you should still be on your cell phone] if the line goes dead or stops ringing, there is a short with the fax machine or wire to the jack.if you hear a busy signal without the fax plugged in, unplug everything you have plugged into phone jacks thruout the house. call your # again.if you hear ringing on your cell phone, plug everything back in one at a time.[again while still on your cell phone] if it was one of the phones plugged into a jack, when you plug the shorted phone back into the jack, the line will go dead again. that phone or cord is the problem.
if still rings busy when everything is unplugged, then call your phone company. it can be an inside wire or jack problem, or the problem is outside your home.
hope this helps

NOT CONNECTING

Hi, have you connect your OfficeJet to one of your telephone outlet using a phone cord(usually provided with a AIO printer)? Fax requires analog phone line to operate. If you have a corded phone, you could disconnect it and hook it up to your OfficeJet.

Once you got it hooked up, try dial a # to your cellphone so you know it's dialing properly.

Good Luck!
Tony
