I was told by the cadiilac dealership that the ECM was fried....can I install that myself?

Contact the dealership and tell them the ECM doesn't work and you need a mobile electrician to come and fix it.

that's a dealership thing you have to bring it to a dealership

you can pull the PCM out and send it to a rebuilder to have it fixed.

The dealership told me I needed to replace my TCM, so i went ahead and bought a remanufactured one at Auto Zone. Not being too mechanically inclined, Im still wondering if anyone has had any experience pulling one of these out and switching in a new one. I have asked this before but figured my old thread threw people off with title being about the codes instead of a potential resolution. I know Kevq35 wont like this new thread too much(thanks for the only input so far), but I'm just hoping anyone with any advice will throw it out there real quick so I know what I'm getting myself into.

These cars are silly....what happened to Cadillac.....jeez....it's a damn shame....all the cts's are just **** it seems....I think all of them are here in the forums being diagnosed....cause dealerships are crooks....the world needs a *******....I think it's getting one too....lol

The ECU is not reading the chip in the key. Replacing the ECU will not solve the problem. It is an input issue(signal to ECU) not an output issue ( signal from ECU). Perform an OBDII scan of stored fault history. Probably an ignition switch problem.

CHECK IGNITION SWITCH 40 MP FUSE AND STARTER FUSE LINK.CHECK ALTERNATOR FUSE.MOST TIME IF BATTERY POLARITY HOKED UP WRONG YOU CAN FRY RADIO, ALTERNATOR, ECM, AND THE IGNITION SYSTEM.

The PCMor powertrain control module is only on 1996 and newer cars.Earlier models have a ECM or electronic control module/pcm.You want to change the ECM if its a 1992.Its located under the right hand side of the instrument panel.The ecm has a prom( programmable read only memory)in it.You will need to remove this from the old ecm and install in the new ecm.The ECM/PCM can be used in many different GM vehicles but the prom is very specific and must be used only in the vehicle it was designed.The prom will not come with the new ecm and must be carefully removed and installed on the new ecm.There also is a CALPAK in the ECM ( A devise for fuel delivery) This may come with the new ECM But make sure all parts are the same.You should get a vehicle repair manual to do this job correctly,and make sure you do not damage your PROM.Your PROM is very IMPORTANT!

It is more likely the solenoid, the PCM is very seldom the problem, about 3% of the time to be exact.
