This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free worldwide, and may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status.

When I turn the camera on, it does just has a black screen. The setting show around the screen, but you cannot see anything on the screen.
same problem as guest 1. what did you end up doing? Camera still turns on and shows pictures I have taken in the past but when I take a picture now it is just black as well as the picture. I have a SD1000 Canon
