Singer 3232 machine was sewing fine now motor runs but needle does not move up and down

Check if the machine is in the bobbin winding mode. To wind the bobbin, the bobbin spindle has to be moved to the right. (The hand wheel will not turn if the bobbin spindle is in this position.) If it is, move the spindle to the left.

If the hand wheel turns, then check for a thread jam. Remove the top thread and take out the bobbin case. Gently turn the hand wheel forward and backwards until the thread comes free of the hook in the bobbin race. Follow this by cleaning any lint from the bobbin race of the sewing machine.

The last possibility is that the belt has failed. This belt transfers the energy from the motor to the needle bar. One source of the belt is http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/motor-belt-singer-007158xxl5.aspx . You can find YouTube videos on changing the belt. There are other parts that transfer the forces form the belt to the needle bar. However, I suggest you find a good sewing machine mechanic if any of these parts fail.

The manual has good pictures of the bobbin spindle on page 11 (page 18 of the PDF). Singer has the manual on their support page: http://www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals . The direct link to the manual is http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/e06cb85928ace9753f1a7124f4a2df6168ffecf0.pdf .

I hope this helps.

HOW TO CHANGE THE OLD BELT ON THIS MACHINE

The one thing on a sewing machine that needs the most repair work is the belt. The sewing machine belt is a piece of rubber that makes the wheel turn and the needle go up and down in a sewing motion. If the belt is in bad shape, the sewing machine will not work. Sometimes while sewing you may notice a burnt rubber smell. When you smell this, you know it is time to change the belt. Changing a sewing machine belt is fairly easy; just make sure you have the proper belt.

My sewing machine want sew bought a new foot pedal

Does the motor run or the handwheel turn? If the handwheel turns, then the motor is probably okay but the belt may be bad.

Sorry the needle is not going down,

Needles will not go down for:
1. The lock on the hand wheel isn't locking. Try this
a. Loosen the lock like you're going to wind a bobbin.
b. Loosen screw that is on the side of the lock. (sometimes front)
c. Tighten the lock just like when you're going to sew.
d. Tighten the screw that is on the side of the lock.(sometimes front)
e. Turn hand wheel by hand. Did the needle rise and fall?
2. The drive belt isn't moving the shaft.
a. Remove the top of the sewing machine.
b. You will most likely have to remove the panel on the end where the hand wheel is.
c. Turn your hand wheel to see if the belt is moving the shaft or is it broken?
d. Replace if you need to. (look at wear). Loosen the motor.
e. Make your motor run (foot pedal) slowly. Tighten the belt by pushing on the motor while it is running. When the motor is placed at the right place the motor will be moving with very little drag. (This will need a listening ear)
f. At this point tighten motor and retest for the speed and drag.

My Singer sewing machine model 500A is slow and I see and smell smoke

This sewing machine doesn't have a belt. The motor is bad or the gears between the motor and the upper horizontal rod is worn. Remove the hand wheel by removing the screw from the outside edge. Then you can turn the brake (in center) and pull the assembly off. Take the gear out from inside by sliding it out. (Remember order) N

My hand wheel turns and my needle stops even thou I have it turned so that it should sew. I will be sewing along and all of a sudden the hand wheel starts turning.

If this is an older machine that the motor drives the hand wheel with a belt, then look at what holds the wheel to the interior shaft (a bolt, screw, or friction knob that releases the interior shaft to allow winding a bobbin). Hope this helps!

A FRIEND GAVE ME A SUPERLOCK 2000 WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THE HANDWHEEL WAS HARD TO TURN AND MACHINE WONT RUN WHEN PLUGGED IN. I OPENED THE SIDE COVER WHERE HANDWHEEL IS LOCATED. FOUND THE BELT WAS DRIVEN OFF THE MOTOR. PUT ON THE BELT ON THE MOTOR, OILED THE MOVING PARTS.
WOKRING GREAT NOW.
