My ps2 slim will play dvds and start some games such as gran turismo 3 and metal gear solid snake eater while when gran turismo 4 is put in the drive, it asks for a format disk. When I play gran turismo 3, I can buy cars and all those sort of set up things but when I try to start a game it just keeps loading (the flashing white square in the corner) and a small ticking sound comes from the dvd drive. Metal Gear Solid also starts but when I press new game it returns to the screen asking me to press start.
the game cds are not dirty but in fine shape with few scratches (less then 3). First thing I would do is test it in another ps2 to isolate if the problem is with the disc or the ps2. If it's the disc have it buffed at game stop. If it's the ps2 try a lens cleaner. Thank you, Lee
Yes the problem is the laser. It's on its way out (and is almost completely out). You can find a new laser for the 77001 console at the following page. They also sell the completely laser assembly which includes all moving parts in there:
do you have a slimline ps2? the problem is more than likely with the drivers in your console. do all your other games work just fine? only gt4 thats not working? gt4 is a duel layered disc unlike most games. my console won't play it either. plays all other games, even ones on the blue discs wiv no problem.
yeah i had to restart the whole stinking game because act one : end wouldn't load. not that i was that far into this game but it was a pain nonetheless. I don't know why this happened. I didn't use any cheats or anything like that. I think the "Metal Gear" franchise has gone downhill starting with "Snake Eater" for the PS2. It's sad because this series has so much promise but then all of a sudden Hideo Kojima started with all sorts of weird plots and way way to much dialogue.

Games like God of War 2, Grand Turismo 4 etc take time to load and some times these games are not loaded by consoles with weak lenses or dirty lens.You should consider cleaning your lens.Cleaning lens might solve your problem plus here is a trick for you to play such heavy games(Although its about playing DVDs on PS2 but you can play your game by following this tip the same way.) Okay even tho your in the wrong section im still going to help you alot of the good games for PS2 are Kingdom hearts 2 God of war 3, Gran Turismo 3, Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkachi 3, Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater. Theres more but these are my personal favorites and i prefer you get Guitar Hero 3 and other games but these are very very good games so i suggest you buy these and the PS2 is pretty small and its easy to carry. It supports broad band internet and has a built in Ethernet card so dont need to buy 1 and you can play games using the analog stick and memory cards are about 8 MBs of space on it.
