yes, the battery is charged and I've tried all settings. my thought was that it could be the clutch but wasn't sure. is this your best guess?

Hmmm some times the counterclockwise screw that attaches the chuck to the drill come forward and that is how then it stucks the 3 parts that fix a drill to a chuck. Check if this screw come forward. If yes then destroy it and replace it... We destroy it by using a drill smaller than it (usually it is 5mm so we use 4mm bit and of course a CARBIDE one because even cobalt ones can not drill a hardened bolt)
If you begin to ratchet, and then the bit stops, and the drill is still running, the gearbox will have to be replaced. That is a part # 616908-03 and runs about 80.00
Here is a link to the DeWalt website where you can download the part diagram, take the unit apart, and verify that this is all you need.
there are 4 hex screws the tip to fit it can be bought from most hard ware stores like drill dits they com in many different sizes. undo the screws and take of the tip toll be carefull to not not tip it downwards *** all the gears will fall out find the broken part take it out and replace with spare from dewalt supplys
You may have inadvertently hit the
hammer/drill switch and it is floating
the middle between functions.
This selector switch has a symbol
showing a drill bit on one side and a
symbol of the hammer on the other.
Engage the switch bacK into the
drill position
Open chuck all the way (like for a large drill bit). There should be a set screw at the bottom (where you would put a drill bit). Don't turn too hard - it may be a left handed screw (I don't remember if it is a lefty for sure but try gently each way then with a bit more force each way until it moves).
this is not a common problem with dewalt. I have been using them in my construction business for years and only heard of this once or twice. I would go to their web site and get the number for their customer service. They stand behind their products and im sure they will help in every way they can to repair the drill
