Hello,
Sony handycam model starts with CCD-XXXX shows that its analog camcorder and its picture signal is analog. You can't connect directly camera with PC to transfer files. You need to install MPEG card or some thing like that in PC 1st and this card will digitize analog picture signal into compatible format.

How can i convert tapes to dvd

You can connect the Camcorder to the Computer using A/V interface to transfer the recordings to Computer.
Once you transfer the recordings from tape to computer, you can use any burning software to burn the recordings to DVDs.
In order to capture the analog videos, you can use the Windows Movie Maker available in the Computer.

I have a working TRV81 Hi8 HandyCam and 15 Hi8 tapes I'd like to convert to digital and make ready for edit on IMovie (Mac). Would appreciate any advice....

The only way to do that is to play it in a device that plays Hi8 tapes and somehow converts it to a digital signal (likely through firewire as DV), then capture it to your computer just like a digital camcorder.

There are several ways:
1. Buy a device (like a camera) that plays it, output through RCA cables to your other camera or tape deck that is digital through the line in, and then just record that. (Alternatively, you could put that signal into a DVD-R machine and record onto a DVD, then just copy the files off the DVD, if you don't have a way to capture DV through firewire.)
2. Buy a device that plays Digital8 (same tapes, but miniDV FORMAT) and output directly from the tape through firewire. This means you must buy a SONY (only brand that made [now discontinued] Digital8) camcorder or deck [if decks were made, though those are usually expensive].

So, the simple answer: get a Digital8 camera and capture, or get another digital camcorder and a Hi8 camcorder and play through the digital one into the computer.

Buying a Sony Handycam (OLDER model) will be your easiest option, and probably possible on ebay, etc., for $100-$200.

Short of this, you could look to a friend or a professional solution for just getting the tape copied (like VHS->DVD services exist, there is probably some place you can mail your tape to).

EDIT: I should add: You included "8mm" in your title-- that is a bit confusing. 8mm refers to a few formats. One is film (obviously not what you're referring to), but then there is the older "8mm" tape format; it's like Hi8, but I believe it's actually not the same tape-- unlike Digital8 and Hi8which share a physical medium. I don't think you can get an 8mm -> Digital device, so you'd need to go through the RCA cables, as described above. [And though Hi8 is actually 8mm in width, it's not quite the same as the other "8mm" format... for whatever odd reason someone decided.... frown.gif]
However, I suspect you ARE actually working with Hi8, so this shouldn't be a problem.

Convert a Hi8 to cd

Hi 8 tapes are analogue and need to be converted to digital before a DVD can be made of them. You can pass the signal through a digital video camera to the computer to convert them. Only very short videos could be copied onto a CD as most video files are much larger than a CD's capacity.
I'm not sure about digital 8 but maybe the camera only has an analogue output? If the lead goes to RCA plugs - that is analogue. A firewire socket means a digital output.

Converting Hi-8 camcorder tapes to DVD

Did u try to connect your cam to a DVD recorder and record a dvd with the information from your tapes? Or I suggest to go to an electronic store and ask about a video converter package (Plextor and Dazzle both from Pinnacle Studio) and they will give you all the information. If you have more question please do not hesitate. Best regards

LG vs Lite On

both are just the same features just to write file from your hard drive. Maybe your point is you want the video from your VHS tapes will transfer to your hard drive. The only way to copy the video from your VHS is you need an external VHS player at the same time it will record the running video to a soft copy.

Please check this maybe this will be helpful http://www.allformp3.com/dvd-copy-software/convert-vhs-to-dvd.htm

How do I transfer my camcorders recordings from HI8 tape to a computer or DVD?

Do you have another video camera that will hook up to your computer? In the past, I've connected my old Hi-8 to my Mini DV, recorded the footage from the Hi-8 to the Mini DV and then digitized on the computer from the Mini DV. You will however need some video software like iMovie for this solution.
You can also, hook the Hi-8 camera up to a VCR or TV using the appropriate cable and view it that way.
