This means that the counter related to the amount of ink these pads absorb during print head cleaning cycles and from edge to edge printing is nearly at the programmed limit. You can still print by pressing the Start button.
However, you can expect the printer to stop working soon. You can clean out the waste ink pads yourself. This is a bit messy so have plenty of newspaper around. Disassemble the printer from the top. The pads (rubber of some type) are below the cartridge carrier on the side. Pull them out and blot most of the ink off them. Then run under water until the water comes out clear. Allow to dry (you can speed up the drying process with a hair dryer).
Finally reset the waste ink counter in the service mode:
With the printer off but connected to power, Press and hold Set/Reset and then press the Power button. When the power light is lit, continue to hold the Power button and press Set/Reset twice. The light should be green.
Now press Set/Reset 4 times (the light will switch between orange and green at each press). Turn off the printer. The counter should be reset.
Do not reset the counter without cleaning or replacing the pads. You will get ink spreading all over the printer. Additionally, the waste ink counter is set to a value that should be reached near the printer's end of life with normal usage. Other parts may fail soon.
I hope this helps.

Eight flashes: Waste ink absorber almost full
The printer has a built-in waste ink absorber for the ink used during Print Head cleaning. Eight flashes indicates that the waste ink absorber is nearly full. Press the RESUME/CANCEL button to cancel the error so you can continue printing. Before the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, contact a Canon service representative.
Important
Canon recommends that you call for service as soon as this error occurs. Once the waste ink absorber becomes completely full, printing will no longer be possible
