Ps3 won't read discs - Sony Playstation 3 (40 GB) Console

Only the first version of the PS3 had PS2 backwards compatibility, They did make a special edition Metal Gear Solid version with it included but other than that no other PS3 will play PS2 discs... No matter what Add-On you install.

sounds like wrong parts u installed,,must be same player,,if a 40gb ps3,,must be out of same ps3,,and so on,,,

If you have this problem it is because the laser has shifted from where it needs to be and the good news is that it is not that hard to fix all you need is a good repair guide.

You can of course send it in but the disc reading issue you should be able to fix in less than 1 hour from home.

What you need to do here is determine whether the problem is the disc itself or the PS3 drive. You can easily test to see if the problem is the disc by putting in another PS3 Game, Blu-Ray, or DVD. If it reads it, then the problem is the disc itself, not the PS3.

It could just be that the disc is a little dirty, or that a fingerprint is blocking the laser from reading the disc inside of the PS3. You can try cleaning it with a lightly-damped piece of toilet paper. You will also want to dry it off with a dry piece of toilet paper. If the PS3 still won`t read it, then the problem may be that it`s scratched. If this is the case, your best bet may be to go to Best Buy to purchase a kit that removes these kinds of scratches. Places like EB Games and Gamestop also have professional cleaners to clean these discs for a mere $5.00.
Now, if there are no discs that work inside your PS3, that indicates a problem with the laser inside the drive. There are means of cleaning the laser inside of the drive, but doing so will break the warranty seal. This means that your PS3 will no longer be covered under Sony warranty if it breaks down in the future.

This is a very common problem with the PS3 and is caused by a problem with the laser on the Bluray drive which is malfunctioning and can no longer read the game disk properly.

The PS3 uses a dual laser system. This consists of either a dual refractor type lens or two entirely seperate lenses depending on which pickup is fitted to your particular system. One laser is for reading ordinary DVD disks and PS2 disks and the other for Bluray and PS3 games.

The symptoms you describe are quite typical of a failure of one of these lasers i.e the Bluray laser has failed.

Prob the BluRay lens, is it still under warranty???

This is a very common problem on the Ps3 and is the first indicator that the Bluray drive is malfunctioning. Usually this can be pinpointed to the laser lens within the drive which is failing to read information from the disk. Sometimes this can be resolved by cleaning the laser but this is not always guaranteed to work.
