A couple things you might try.. remove the card carefully and check the position of the "lock" tab. Make sure it is fully in the unlocked position - not locked or a point between the two positions. Reinsert and try again.

It sounds lie you're using a card reader to download the pictures - try formatting the card while in the card reader via computer. The card should be completely empty when the format is complete. You can even try copying files to and from the card to make sure its ok and format again. When complete, try again in camera.

If the problem persists, check to make sure the card is on Nikon approved memory card list for use with the Coolpix L1 (provided below):

The following is a list of approved memory cards for the Coolpix L1 digital still camera. These cards have been tested and approved for use with the Coolpix L1.
The L1 uses SD (Secure Digital) memory. Sandisk:

  • 64MB, 128 MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1 GB, 256MB*, 512MB*, 1GB*
Toshiba:
  • 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1 GB, 128 MB*, 256MB*, 512MB
Panasonic:
  • 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 1 GB, 256MB*, 512MB*, 1GB*
* - Cards rated for 10MB/s (high speed) Other cards have not been tested. For more details on the memory cards listed above, please contact the manufacturer.

The list came direct from Nikon Support. Other cards may work, but only those on the list are approved. Successful use of other cards can not be guaranteed.

I hope this helps!

Nikkon transfer won't recognize my camera

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to transfer pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo management program such as Picasa.

I have pictures on my coolpix P80 that are showing on the camera, but they are not on the sandisc. Is there a way to transfer them from the camera to the disk? Help!!!!!! Jennifer

Hi,

Download your Nikon COOLPIX L18 User's Manual from this LINK. Read pages 75, 76, 89, and 90.
It will show you the steps in transferring/copying of pictures from the camera's internal memory into your memory card. Other functions are also available for reading.

I hope this works for you. Thanks for using Fixya!

Cannot get write protection off my memory card for my Nikkon Coolpix L4

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

Camera works with standard SD memory card, but not SDHC

There are hardware incompatibilities between SD and SDHC cards. They're upward compatible in that SDHC devices will accept SD cards but not the other way around. You will have to hunt down SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Nikon Camera does not accept any memory card

Try formatting the card in the camera, not the computer.

SDHC memory card

The L1 is an old camera, before the SDHC standard. There is no forward compatibility (SD devices can't use SDHC cards), only backward (SDHC devices can use SD cards).

The latest version of the firmware is available at http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13783

That still won't let you use SDHC cards.

Card cannot be used

This means that the card memory can not be read, make sure the contacts are, clean. use pressurized air cans available from most places like, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Staples, etc.

lightly blow out the memory card and the camera slot, check pin alignment, Format the memory card on your computer first and re-insert in camera. Use another card to see if error continues.

Memory card cannot be read

Well this could come from one of 2 problems that spring to mind...

1. You do not have the correct software installed on your PC, as thus presents a problem in reading said memory card, especially if you are using non-specific or generic software.
Ensure the software you are using is for the Nikon Coolpix S200.

2. The memory card may also be faulty, if you feel this may be the case, i suggest having a dealer or repairer take a look at the card.
Tip: Some photo labs have self service units for most types of digital cameras. Drop in and try establishing if the memory card can be read.
