If the connectors are hooks, I suggest you first loosen the latch strap (depending on the seat, you may need to push a grey button to release the strap). Then, squeeze the hook and push the connector into the seat bight, Rotate the connector 90 degrees (along the length of the connector) and pull the hook out.
If you cannot remove the connector, go to www.nhtsa.gov and look for a fitting station in your area. They will help you.

We would strongly advise you to take the vehicle to your nearest authorised Safety 1st retailer and ask for a carseat fitter trained member of staff to provide a physical fitting of the seat to confirm that it can be safely secured and used in your vehicle and to demonstrate to you how to correctly fit it.
Instructions on cleaning are usually included in the car seat's manual. Follow those directions carefully. It is important not to damage the harness or remove the flame retardancy of the cover by washing incorrectly. -- Marc
If you have the product number, you can probably get a manual on their website here: http://safety1st.djgusa.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/InstructionSearchView

I think on your car seat there is a rod that is under the seat and it slides thru the base.
There is a small tang that you press to one side and the rod will slide out separating the
seat from the base.
I imagine you've already fixed this problem by now. I have two of these car seats and it took me the longest time to figure it out. If you still need help, let me know. You're right, the instructions aren't as easy as they seem.
To change it into a belt positioning booster seat, you remove the harness straps completely and use the positioning clips on the side of the carseat (up by the head) to position the automobile's seat belt to the appropriate position.
