How to open MAYTAG MAV408DAWW washer for repair

Many new washer use a lid lock instead of a brake to keep people from reaching into the spinner before it stops. You probably have a
bad lid lock. Have a repair man open the top cover and repair or replace the lid lock.

If you have to ask, you probably won't do it. It involves dismantling the machine, removing the drum from the tub and drawing the bearings off the spindle. Refitting the bearings is easier but you still have to put the machine back together. Get a quote from an engineer and if it's less than half the cost of a new machine it may be worthwhile. If it's more than half the price of a new machine get a new one.

Remove any kinks in the drain hose. Ensure that the washer is not sitting on the hose.

Inspect the household drain. Remove clogs, if possible. Call a plumber if you cannot remove the clogs.

Check the drain and make sure there is an air gap between the hose and drain. An air gap is necessary to prevent the drain hose from siphoning water.

Clean the pump filter. Open the pump access door. Turn the pump filter counter-clockwise and remove it. Remove dirt and debris. Replace the filter and close the pump access door.

Rearrange the clothing in the load. An unbalanced load can prevent the washer from spinning or draining.

Allow the washer to cool down for two hours. If the washer overheats, it will stop the motor and cool down before restarting.

Close the door completely. The washer will not operate if the door is not securely closed.

The pulley is not sold separately. You will have to replace motor which comes with pulley attached.

My rule of thumb: Take what you paid for the washer new and divide by number of years without repairs. That is your cost per year for the washer. If the repair will get you another year and is less than the number above do the repair. If you have done more than 2 major repairs in a year it is time to think new. eric

Check for the tighten nut to agatator is tighten. If agatator is lose it floats up and down during the wash. There is a lock ring (rubber) on the shaft that holds the agatator on, check this, if off replace thid . If the agatator is still in good shape can still use it , if not pull of and replace it. This work is't hard to do.

Tub bearings and seal have failed. My SAV405DAWW just started with the loud grinding and I am now in the process of finding out if I can fix it myself. Kurt
