IBM ThinkPad T20 - Won't boot windows

I bought a used IBM Thinkpad...when I start it up, it wants a password(BIOS-not windows). It won't even boot up or start to loadwindows. How do I reset BIOS password (new motherboard?) or getwindows to load?

I tried to reload windows, but it won't let me...it's a great laptop, but I can't get it to go beyond the DOS startup.

    when switching on laptop it asks for a password with a lock

    the cmos battery was changed and when i powered the system it came on but i couldn't access the setup. the system ibm thinkpad t20 demamded that i enter a password.

    Bought used on ebay, won't boot to bios, just a flash on the HD light and nothing. 2.98v bios batt, good battery. tried the long start reset, no luck, tried shorting bios batt post, still no luck. tried removing all pariffs, same ****.

you can go to the BIOS setting? if you can,look for "Boot Device Priority" or something like that,it's usually placed on Advanced settings. Set the first boot device as your harddisk,save the settings and restart your computer

IBM Thinkpad T20 .when you press F1 for bios setup utility it shows you that it is waiting for bios setup utility it will show this message on the screen for a long time without showing any other problem...
you need to reset the bios, which means opening the machine up and starting up with the motherboard battery removed. then replace the battery and boot as normal.

Hi,

the default BIOS password for this model is merlin but if that doesn't work you have a hard drive password set and may for lack of a better term be screwed. You can try zero wiping the harddrive from another system assuming you have the right cabling/adapters.

If the Hardrive is locked but the BIOS password works you can also acquire a new hard drive cheaper than a password cracker in most cases.

Stuck at IBM Thinkpad Splash Screen
Sound like a memory chip has failed. Try removing the memory, I believe these have on board, but not sure. If it doesn't have on board, you will need at least one chip in. If the problem is still there, try removing the CD drive, occasionally they can cause a no start. If it's not the memory or the CD drive, then try a bios flash. You will need to create a bootable disc from IBM's support site using a different machine (obviously).
If the bios flash doesn't fix it, them the problem will lie with the motherboard.
