While you calling press the joystick to left side to decrease the volume .You have to contact a mobile phone technician to replace the side volume key to rectify it

hi, try the following steps:
1. go to profile
2.click any of your profile that you normally use i.e GENERAL, SILENT ETC
3.click on personalise
4. scroll down till you get to KEY PAD VOLUME
5. reduce it to what you want.

ok this may be late but, there is an app called MagicKey which you can
use to remap the volume keys to some other keys on your phone. My
up-volume key is also damaged and that's how I fixed it, however, you
need a hacked phone or a way to sign the application to be able to
install it.
Normally Nokia N73 get hanged when its phone memory become very low.Try deleting some data from your phone memory.If it doesn't helps please update your phone's firmware.
