SOURCE: WD MyBook 320 GB Premium - Retrieving Data
You should buy a program called "Partition Table Doctor". I went through the EXACT same thing and it was just a bad partition on my mybook which is the EXACT same as yours is. It cleared up the problem for me. I still have problems with my mybook so i wish that I bought a different hard drive, but oh well.
but try "Partition Table Doctor", it will scan your mybook and fix any partition errors with it.
I was in the same boat as you over a year ago and trust me, "Partition Table Doctor" is a LIFESAVER!

SOURCE: how to retrieve data from external drive
I had similar problem. See FAQs on this site. My 300 GB One Touch II drive was not found in the XP machine either as USB or IEEE. When I remounted the drive in an external cabinet from Deltaco ( MAP-KC) is is running since. The Maxtor chassi was the trouble not the 3,5 " drive. All data is recovered. // Regards AH2FOTO

well firstly if u wana recover ur data u have to make the external hdd power up but thats the major area of issue that its not powering up. the difference in plug doesnt make a difference cuz u can use the same plug, the voltage is same thorugh out in ur place from the substation. so it might be a possibility that when u connected ur hdd,the power ON/OFF switch was awredy ON IF hdd has one. so wat i feel is dat u can try opening the hdd and then connect the hdd to ur desktop with help of the BUS CABLE used to connect the HDDs in desktops. so in dat case i would suggest that u go through the manual of ur external hdd to see how to access the the casing in which the hdd is there.then if u happen to get thorugh n it turns on then u dont have to recover ur data. it would still be there. HOWEVER,its recommended that u dont try these things personaaly if u are'nt too tech savy. u shud consult a tech or a freind who knows abt this.

Plug it into another computer if possible, clear ALL files on it.
You must of been sending something to it when you flicked the switch, they would normally go off straight away.
(Backup on the other computer first)
If this does not work then you may want to see if you can see a usb stick in your USB ports. If you can it's a fault with the harddrive, nothing else you can do.
