I have a stanley HYDROSTATIC (no shift lever , just forward and reverse foot pedal,) riding mower , looks like new , bought it used , rebuilt carb , runs great now butttttttt,,,,,when I took it out in yard for a test drive It creeps along like a snail going forward , backs up at fast . I know the linkage rod from foot pedal to tranny has an adjustable hook up @ transmission location but the rod from foot pedal is already pushing the linkage back as far as it can go now , I disconected it at the foot controll and measured it by hand and it goes as far as it would hooked up or un hooked ? ANY Ideas ?

I have several ideas, but I don't think you are going to like any of them. Fluid pressure in the forward flow is low. Possible causes: 1. Internal seal failure in the trans.
2. Trans fluid is low - has leaked out
3. Trans fluid is thin.
Any of these repairs require major transmission service or trans replacement. For the most part, Hydro transmissions are worry free. When they do have a problem, the recommended repair from Hydro is to replace the trans. They do not have a fill or drain plug, with the exception of having a vent, they are sealed. I have heard of people filling thru the vent, but not always with success and there is no way of knowing when it is full.
Sorry.

Keeps going into neutral and pops back into gear when it feels like this is a backhoe

Hi Frank:
Hydrostatic drive?
Shifter 3 position - Forward Neutral Reverse - Lever?
Follow the linkage from the shift lever. Probably a worn part or broken spring.

Why does speed control lever return to neutral when going forward ?

this model uses a series of groves cut into mower body to maintain the transmission gear/direction , it's held into groves by a spring just under the cover , if this is broken a replacement can be gotten from sears (part# 164X39) to replace it , it should take at least five pounds of force to move shift lever out of grove to next gear , if not then your shift spring is loose or broken

I need to adjust my scag mower deck

The mower deck can be adjusted from a height of 1.0 inch to 6.0 inches at 1/4-inch intervals. To adjust the cutting height:
1. Disengage the power to the cutter blades.
2. Push the cutting height adjustment foot pedal all the way forward using your right foot until it locks in place
3. Insert the lanyard pin into the cutting height index at the desired cutting height. Push forward on the deck lift foot lever, hold in place and pull back on the deck release lever. Slowly release the foot pedal. A deck height decal is located on the cutting height index as an aid in adjusting the deck to the desired height.

I have a John Deere LT155. When you let off of either the forward or reverse pedal the tractor comes to an abrupt stop. It will actually lock the wheels.

Hi, most likely the brakes are hanging up. Follow the brake pedal path to the rear of the mower, it is attached to a small arm on the side of the diff that is probably locked forward. This lever and the pins behind it need to be freed up so the lever operates forward and backward freely when the brakes are applied and released. Hope this helps, regards Phil.

When I depress the forward drive pedal I move very slowly weather the deck is engaged or not. It is also very slow and sometimes stops in reverse. I usually have to use my foot and pull back on the...

You didn't specify a brand or type but it sounds like a hydrostatic drive model and if so, it is 1 of 4 likely things

Drive belt from engine to transaxle slipping badly (replace the belt)
FWD-REV pedal linkage faulty
Transaxle is broken or has fluid issues (not user fixable)
by-pass rod (neutral lever/rod) is pulled out a bit. (push it in fully!)

I have just bought a ride on Electrolux mower and can start it but it want go forward. What havent I done to make it go?

I presume this is a unit with the hydrostatic drive (automatic, just step on a pedal). There should be a rod or lever, usually on the back of the mower, that will release the hydrostatic and let you push the mower by hand. This basically bypasses the system, and the mower will not move if this lever/rod is pulled. If someone had to push this mower to load or move it, chances are it's not been pushed back into operating mode.

Craftsman hydrostatic strains but won't go forward or reverse

Hi,
There is a brake lever attached to your transaxle, that when activated, pushes dowel pins which serve as brake pistons, against a brake pad which presses against a disk from your transaxle...whew. Much like a disk break on your car.
The pistons, or dowel pins may be sticking, causing you to be "riding your brake". A little disassembly and some good ole WD-40 might loosen up the bind.
Good luck!

Hydrostatic mower goes in reverse but not forward. Only 73 hrs on it!

On my hydrostatic there is an adjustment on the forward/back lever which can be made to run all reverse or all forward. Normal setting gives both of course. Look at that adjustment. Maybe something let go.
