Can't connect to configure password through web address 192.168.0.50

Dear Sir or Madam,
My friend gave me his D-Link DWL-2100AP, H/W Ver: A2 F/W Ver. 2.00. I reset the unit so it can go back to its default settings. I have a wired router in my office (NetGear) that I can connect this unit to one of the pc's that is not being used and then I can have internet access using 'default' network with my MacBook Pro. My problem is that i need to set up a password to give it some security because when this unit is plugged in, anyone can use it to access my other office computers and it could be disastrous.
I don't know how to connect it so i can access it's menu to configure. I tried directly connecting the unit to my pc and also directly connecting it to my Macbook Pro laptop. Of course, no luck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks tech curly for your very prompt response. You helped me connect to this access point. It wasn't displayed in the same way as you had seen because I probably had an older version. I did have to type 'admin' for username but i had to leave password field blank. Thanks again for all of your help. I just found this web site today.

    Dear Tech,
Thank you for helping me secure this access point, but now i find that when I try to use it to surf the net, it takes a very long time to connect to various web sites (almost like using a dialup modem) even though i have a cable connection. Sometimes it even times out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
When I reset the access point back to it's default, it connects quick.
    Thanks for your help.

Here is what you can do. You need to access the setup page of your Dlink Access Point.
1. connect a computer directly to the access point (via ethernet). Then assign an IP address on the computer (IP: 192.168.0.10 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 DG: 192.168.0.1 ). It is necessary for you to assign an IP address because your access point does not have the ability to assign an IP address to the a computer, its is not like a router.
2. After you assigned an IP address, you can now access the Dlink Access point's setup page. To do that open your browser in the address bar type http://192.168.0.50 (this is the address of your access piont) and it will ask you to put a username and password. Just type admin for both username and password field. And it will take you to the setup page of the access point.
3. To enable a wireless security, just click the tab on the left hand side that says Advanced, it will populate the options under Advanced and select security. On the main screen you will now have an option for security modem, you can select wpa-psk, then on the Key box you can type any password that you want (8-63 characters). Then click update there at the bottom of the page. If you also want to change the name that the Access point is broadcasting you can go to the on the left hand side that says Wireless and put any name that you want on the box that says SSID. After that click updat button again.
4. Now after updating the settings, You can reconnect to the network. And this time you will now be asked for the network key. Just type your network key. That's it.

Just reply to this post in case that you need more help.

    You're welcome!

there is alot of possible reasons why its happening... it may run a bit slower if you have a security but not same as a speed of a dialup connection. Have checked if you are getting at a good or very signal? Try to change the channel try channels 1,11. check if there is an interference like cordless phones running on 2.4 ghz. Does all of your wireless computers is experiencing the same problem?

In order not to need to change any settings on the computer, simply connect the AP to the internt via an ethernet cable connected to the router.
And then proceed by writing 192.168.0.50 on the computer, etc.
After saving settings of the AP, disconnect ethernet cable.
Hence, no need for any changes in the computer`s settings, even if we are talking temporary changes!

SOURCE: can't connect to configure password through web address 192.168.0.50

When you reset the AP, how long did you press the reset button? To reset the AP to factory defaults, the reset button should be pressed and held for at least 15 seconds. Also, once reset, the AP should have the following settings:

IP address: 192.168.0.50
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default admin username: admin
Default admin password: <blank>

When connecting your PC, either set an IP address within the same subnet (192.168.0.51 255.255.255.0) or choose "Obtain address automatically".

I hope this helps.

How to set password

if your router doesn't have password yet, you need to get inside of the router configuration.
follow this steps. open an internet explorer at IE web browser type this default IP address,
192.168.0.1, then put this username ADMIN and leave the password blank.
when you get inside you can see the all configuration that you want.

note: the ip address that i give is the default ip. you cannot use this ip if your router is configuered already, unless you reset it.

hope it will help you.

D-link dwl-2100ap in WDS mode Received Deauth: WLAN 1 11G STA

I have had similar problems with DWL-2100 and (much less often) with DWL-3200. I have no solution, but a workaround: changing the authentication mode. For example, if the units are using WPA-Personal, I change it (on both) to WPA2-Personal or WPA-Auto-Personal. It doesn't seem to matter which mode is used, it's just the fact of changing it that helps (eventually). You may have to go through the process more than once. Also, realize that although the web interface comes up 30 seconds or so after a reboot, it may take another 30-60 seconds before a link is established, so don't give up too soon while trying these changes.

Hi blanx - don't rate this yet. Are you just trying to access the D-Link to secure the network? Have you determined your setup and simply need to secure the D-Link? Thanks.
