Tape is stuck

I have a stuck tape in a Sony videi Hi8 Handycam. I was changing tapes and the new tape made it most of the down and got stuck. I think a small cord got in the tape compartment when the camera starting to run. Now it beeps and shows an up arrow on viewfinder. Can't get the tape to go up or down.

It's better - the tape went in and runs, rewinds, etc. However, I can't get it to eject. When I push the eject button, the compartment holding the tape extends but won't release the tape.

Thanks all - it works now! It helped to squeeze or put pressure on the on the carriage.

    Thanks much.

First take out the battery. Then start unscrewing the outside panels to take it apart. Basically any screw you find, take off. The easiest way not to loose them is by sticking them into the side of a box. After you get the camera panels off, you should be able to carefully get inside and dislodge anything that may be in the way. Once you are able to dislodge the cord or whatever is causing this problem. Try inserting the battery and ejecting the tape. Let me know if you are having any trouble with this or have any other questions and I would be glad to help.

Good luck

Is there still something stuck in that spot? If it is trying to open the tape compartment, you could try helping it along and see if it is just caught. As long as you don't apply too much force, it should open without wrecking anything. Just be aware of what parts are supposed to move before doing this. Let me know how this goes.

TRY THIS: Open the tape door on the bottom. LEAVE IT OPEN. Power off your camcorder and remove the battery. With the battery removed, move the power switch to ON. LEAVING THE POWER ON AND THE TAPE DOOR OPEN, replace the battery. The tape should eject without damage. This works for many other models as well.

Hope that helps!

Here is another solution I found:

If your carriage is not attempting to pop up at all but is stuck in the
camera and will not move, this post WON'T HELP YOU. If you're like me,
however, and have a carriage that tries to eject but can't complete the
cycle, this may help you. First familiarize yourself with the tape
carriage. Disconnect the battery and the power cord. Turn the unit over
so that the bottom faces up, and use the eject button to open the door.
Examine the tape carriage on either end, and you'll notice a couple of
springs which keep tension on the outside section of the carriage so
that it will pop out when the catch is released. The spring closest to
the front of the unit (the lense) is the one which also operates the
catch for the pop-out mechanism. If you will put pressure just under
the top of this spring when the carriage mechanism is at the apex of
its eject cycle (and before it reloads itself because it cannot eject
the tape), then the carriage catch will release and pop out, exposing
the tape for removal. If the unit has "eaten" the tape (i.e., the
transport mechanism has it pinched or wrapped or both, then when you
release this catch on the carriage the tape will be pulled, crinkled,
and could be cut or broken. If this tape is full of important memories,
you might let the tech get it out himself. Also, more damage to the
tape will occur if, after getting the carriage to pop out, you try to
pull the tape out of the carriage after it has opened, if in fact the
transport mechanism is still hanging onto it. Now close the tape door
and turn the unit off. Plug the unit in or connect the battery, turn it
back on, turn it over (bottom's up) and open the tape door. Once the
tape carriage reaches the apex of its eject cycle, put pressure on the
top of the spring (the spring end closest to the physical bottom of the
unit, not the "spatial" bottom since the unit is upside down). You
should feel the carriage catch slip out of its latching mechanism and
the door should pop out. If either of these springs are missing or
broken, the carriage will probably not eject even after releasing the
catch. If the carriage is not sliding downward (or when the unit is
upside down, upward) from the bottom of the unit in an attempt to
eject, then the procedure for extracting the tape is much more involved
and requires dissasembly of the unit in order to get it out.

Looks like the tape head cover (the plastic lid-like-thing that protects the magnetic tape underneath) is engaged. Try this..at the side of the cassette, on the top (usually right) side, you should see a small plastic button/tab that releases this cover. Try pressing this button down and gently extract the tape with the other hand. Off course, you will have to remove the outer panel on the camera first to achieve this..

Well, glad that worked! Now you just have to decide which of the solutions helped you most and assign a fixya rating or an "accept" rating :)

Sony handycam video cassette

To the best of my knowledge 8mm VTR's have not been available for some time now. On the other hand there are plenty of Hi8 cameras and players available after market. eBay is a great source. Keep in mind that Hi8 cameras and decks will also play standard 8mm video tapes.
There are also many video tape transfer services that will transfer your 8mm tapes to DVD or other formats of your choice. Just Google "videotape transfer service"

Imovie imports Hi8 tape but not plain 8 tapes

What it is, is the standard 8mm tapes are not digital, and therefore won't import into imovie, unless you have the 8mm to Hi8 option enabled in playback mode, by setting it in the menu, under playback settings.
