The roller on my power head does not spin consistently. So my vac is not picking up of course. The square end pieces and the rod that goes into the wooden roller seem loose. I tried tightening it but it still is not turning. Can I do a fix with glue or something till I can get a new roller?

The end that seems to be frozen is what turns to spin the brush roll. Try turning the machine on and pull back on handle as you would if vacuuming but do not have the brush roller in the nozzle housing. If the piece the brush roller goes over does not spin the motor may be seized or The belt may be broken.
Take it back apart, check it again. Check the plastic where the belt is running for burnt spots. Also check the brush roller sometimes the tension from a new belt can finish off what was left of the bearings and cause the plastic end caps and roller to melt. Pull out the roller and try to spin it while holding the end caps. If it doesn't spin or spins hard there's your smell. Most times when the rollers go bad they break the belt. Replace the roller if necessary Make sure the roller is in correctly and flush and that the bottom plate goes on easily.
May be online I would look up video for it with the model number if your talking about the belt that turns the brush at the bottom there should be a spindle metal rod sticking out one end goes around it on most Vacs the other goes around the brush head there may be a beveled or kind of round area on the head then slide the head ends sometimes square into the slots on the front end may take a bit of pulling to get it into the slots. This is for most common vacs you didnt say what kind or model. Hope this helps.
Sounds like the beater brush is frozen and won't turn. Remove the beater brush and clean off all debris, especially at both ends. You will find a square(?) piece at each end of the beater brush that holds it in place. This need to turn freely. Put a little WD40 on these where the center rod of the beater brush enters the small holders and turn by hand until they turn freely. Once this is done, assemble with new belt, making sure the belt is put on properly. If the belt is missing and you need to replace, I would still do the cleaning on the beater brush. It should move freely when you turn it by hand.
If you are talking about the end cap is broken off the agitator, I would replace the agitator. you can check the motor by turning on the vac without the roller installed.
Lift the headlight and rotate the thumb dial to release the carpet head. It will spin to the side. Rotate the square handle at the front of the vac fully to the left. Remove the carpet head and open it from the bottom side. Observe which side had a little block below the LED belt indicator when you rotate the brush. The brush must go back in this way. The blocks at the end of the brush are color coded for height adjustment. Remove the brush, slide a genuine belt onto the center and close the bottom cover of the housing. make sure the brush spins freely, now look into the belt opening, round hole at the side. Using the square dial at the front of the head, rotate the hook into the belt to twist the belt and open it for installation onto the motor shaft. Reinstall the head onto the vac, using the thumb dial to lock into place and rotate the square handle again . This will release the belt tension onto the motor shaft. Raise the vac up two knotches with the pedal before lower onto the carpet.
You need to disengage the carpet head from the vac itself. Do this by lifting the headlight and rotating the thumb lock underneath. Then release the carpet head by turning the square dial below the light. Once you have lifted the head off the vac you will see from the backside of the head there is a belt hook holding the old belt in a twist. pop the brush cover off at the bottom of the head but note which end of the brush goes right and left. Slide the new GENUINE belt onto the brush roll and inspect the brush for hair and thread caught at the ends. Reisnatll the bottom plate in reverse order making sure the brush sits level in the housing. There are leveling blocks at each which are color coded. Once again rotate the square dial on the front of the housing, in both directions if necessary ,You will feel the dial tension as it hooks your new belt inside the housing and twists it into installation position. Reinstall the head in reverse order onto the vac.
check to see if the spindle (small pencil-thin metal rod) is spinning where it projects from the motor. the belt wraps around this rod. if the rod is spinning when the vac is turned on your brush roller could be jammed. the bearing in the far sides of the brush roller frequently pick of long threads and hair and will stop the brush roller or the bearings sometimes overheat when worn and plastic will melt in this area causing stoppage.
mine was allowing the roller/beater bar to hit the cover as it turned take the cover back off and ensure the beater is in the right place then that the cover is locked in the right place then you can spin it by hand (power cord unplugged of course) and make sure it is clearing everything. BTW, the belt has to be stretched to get the beater bar in place like on most vac.s
