Problem: Computer would freeze at random times and not reboot after start-up. Some random time later, would start-up and operate just fine. All windows software and drivers up to date.
Attempted solutions: took to local notebook repair (Selectronics) and $150 later determined that they did not have a solution. I replaced motherboard (my first time cracking a notebook case, lots-o-parts eh?), loaded all updated software (windows xp pro) and drivers. After replacing the mother board, boot up was normal...operations normal...then....same thing....locks up...won't reboot...randomly.
Random thoughts: Power supply (the original)? CPU thermal problem (fans are working fine)?
Welcome any ideas....
PS: need recommendation on an upgrade for the cpu on this box from a P4 2.8Ghz to???
Thanks for the advice. Scan came up clean. No viruses or software issues...so it must be hardware related...I'm thinking power supply...bad cpu....or? Just one of those nagging things that has me wanting to figure it out....any new ideas are welcomed...R/timedangeloMr. Techno,

I have some experiance with this laptop, and although it looks like 'im a little late here.
The problem this model has it the BIO's incorrectly assigning IRQs.
go to your BIO's and disable your printer port, and in the Device manager of Windows, also disable a few things you dont need, like modem, Firewire, etc.
THis fixed me right up with this model.
there is a BIOs update, but how to install without a floppy
Well there are some things that might help you with this...
first you need to figyer out weather you have a Hardware, or Software problem.
Here are some ideas...
Go to http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html?Str=download for a free scanner. I use it all the time! When you download it and install it, open it and let it scan... this will find ANY problems on your computer!!!
if this dosn't help then go to http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition#tba2 and download the AVG Free. when it is done installing let it scan your computer (may take about 1-2 hrs)
if this does not help and you have no warranty, then I would just sell it somewhere like ebay...

Please check that they have any LED blinking. If it not blinking it is hardware issue. need to contact local tech. if it blinking. Reboot the computer and taping F10 button while you rebooting the computer and run system recovery and follow by the steps.
Check Display with another monitor if not working then problem with display card, if working then Display screen damaged or have a problem. So check it properly.
There should be a factory image on the HD when you try restarting it. Hold down the F8 key or F10 key while its rebooting this should start the recovery process you shouldnt need a windows disk.
it sounds like the operating system has gone corupt so have you got a disc to reinstall windows and all the drivers!if you have i would format the harddrive and reinstall the copy of windows
