first check that your hdd is detecting by your laptop.
i think you have removed mbr master boot record from your hard driver the soution is to create master boot record in your harddrive by using mbr commands.

Blanco is a data cleaner utility that erases everything from a hard drive so data cannot be recovered. Unfortunately, this includes the MBR - or Master Boot Record. The MBR tells the comptuer BIOS how to access the hard drive and use it to boot up.

I would suggest performing a full FORMAT of the hard drive so the MBR will be recreated. If you are installing Windows XP from an install CD, you will be given the option of which drive to install the OS to. Delete all partitions that show up, create a new partition and then choose the Full Format option (not the Quick format).

If you are using a restore disk, you may need to download a boot floppy or CD and format the drive first. Boot to DOS, type in

format c:/

boot from cdrom?
did you answer (Y)
then hit spacebar?
have the bios set to boot from cdrom/first boot device cd-rom?
If any of these settings are not applyed you will not restore xp on your computer

go into bios and conferm settings

first boot device if set as floppy or hard drive change to cdrom
on some systems you can hit the (f12) key to bring up a boot window and select the cdrom and boot from there then it will ask the normal questions

Yes it is nothing to do with hardware problem of yours, here is a tip to install your windows xp on your ACER Extensa, but before that I tell you that your hard drive inside is Sata so this is the solution, go to your BIOS Setup and change the setting of your hard disk from SATA mode to IDE Mode, find it their., and have your installation with your new windows xp, trust me, good luck!

The master boot record maybe be corrupted or virus infected.
To fix the MBR, boot up with your DOS disk and type fdisk /mbr
Then install XP, and delete all partitions and then create a new partition, then do a full NTFS format on the new partition.

You have half a dozen reasons why this will not work. The Operating system (XP) does not recognise the different hardware, the Bios doesn't recognise the MBR (the file structure of the harddrive) and you have all the wrong hardware drivers installed.
There is a way to do this if you have the original XP installation disk, install the harddrive, put the XP installation disk in the CD/DVD drive and set the machine to boot from the CD/DVD first. When the machine boots up and goes to install XP follow the instructions as if you are doing a fresh install, when SetUp attempts to format the harddrive it will discover you already have a version of XP installed and will give you the option to repair it, go ahead with the repair and MAYBE SetUp will be able to see and install the correct hardware drivers. If not you are looking at Slaving the harddrive, saving your personal files and then formatting the harddrive and reinstalling XP fresh.

did you tried by changing the cables?if the problem still persists than it might be a problem with your motherboard.Contact your vendor then.

ok i have had this problem.. (my computer would show the loading screen with all of the commands at the bottom. after this it would not boot up, but show a message on a black screen saying "operating system not found")
I completly tore down the laptop and making sure i had no issues with anything. so here is what i did that is simple and ended up solving the issues 3 times in a row.

1. take the cover off for the hard drive on the bottom of the laptop ( shows 3 very small disks beside each screw)

2. grab the clear strip that is on the hard drive and pull out the hard drive. ( blow out where it connects on the right side if dirty)

3. Reconnect the hard drive this will reset it.

4. Make sure to change back the processes to defaults when the computer starts back up.. If you fail to do so you will have to repeat the process each time you turn off the computer.

(This will only work if you messed up some settings while having the computer on, and not if you have faulty parts.)
