Soon after I start sewing, the needle starts to vibrate violently, the machine makes a loud noise, and the thread jams up. I have cleaned the lint out of the machine, tried different stitches, rethreaded the machine, removed and replaced the bobbin, but this happens every time I try. Before this, the machine had not been used for a couple of months; before that, a friend had borrowed it. Hmmm... The machine is a Janome DC3018.

Remove all the thread. Install a new needle. RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Confirm it follows the correct thread path and the upper tension is set at the midway point.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, you may need to take it for service.
try rethreading the machine--use EVERY thread guide
make sure the needle is inserted up into the needle holder and turned the right direction
make sure the bobbin is inserted correctly into the bobbin case and turned the right direction
clean under the needle plate and in the bobbin area for loose thread or lint
make sure thread has not come off the thread take up lever
also the jam could have caused the machine to jump time and needs a timing or a adjustment
Sounds like you've got a thread jam going on in the bobbin case area. Good cleaning and a new needle will probably fix it. See: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091202121550AAHxN8y
Depends what was causing the noise. It could merely have been the build-up of lint and thread. However, something else could be the cause.
First: Install a brand new needle. A bent, damaged, old needle will frequently cause noise because it is striking something it should not. A dull needle will also make a thunking sound as it tries to penetrate the fabric. The needle should be changed about every 8 hours of sewing...a very inexpensive fix!
Also, be sure to following the oiling instructions (if any) in your manual. Use only fresh good quality sewing machine oil and apply only 1-2 drops in each spot as instructed.
If the top thread still fails to pick up the bobbin thread, it is likely the machine has been knocked out of time. Take it for service.
try rethreading the machine top and bobbin also try a new needle make sure that the top thread has not come off the top thread takeup lever clean under the needle plate and in the bobbin area for lint
have you tried a new needle
Correct needle insertion is mandatory for proper use of your sewing machine.
Raise the needle bar to the highest point, then loosen the needle clamp screw to remove the old needle.
Place the new needle in the needle clamp with the flat side of the needle facing the back, (round needle, the groove in the needle should face away from the shaft).
Push the needle all the way up as far as it will go. Then tighten the needle clamp screw. check the bobbin to make sure it's not damaged rethread the machine top & bobbin clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for lint or threads also make sure the top thread doesn't come off the thread take up lever
Thread jams underneath usually are caused by top thread tension issues. Things to check:
top tension discs are clean and no thread traces caught in there, tension is set to medium number usually 4 or 5 and that the top thread is running freely from the thread spool, correctly thread through the tension discs, and down to the needle. Lower the pressure foot and pull the thread from just above the needle; it should feel firm resistance if under tension correctly.
As you've had a good jam up, good idea to now remove the bobbin, needle plate and bobbin holder (refer to your manual if you have never done this before) and clean out the hook area well, look for any fine thread remants and brush out any lint etc. Oil the rotary hook area as per your manual. Now reassemble, and rethread everything again checking that the bobbin thread is clicked into the tension spring and that the top thread is through the tension discs correctly.
Also, pop in a new needle, flat shank to the back, then try again.
Change needle
Clean under needle plate where feed dogs are for lint
Clean bobbin area for lint or loose threads
Rethread machine top thread make sure to get every thread guide
& bobbin is threaded correctly & inserted in the bobbin case or shuttle correctly
Check tension 3 or 4 is usually good
after you try all this & it keeps jamming then it may need to be serviced
