I have a Sony 50" WEGA rear projection tv. Last night it made a popping sound and then the screen went black. I could still hear audio at that time. I turned the tv off and now there is a blinking red light that keeps going and there is no audio. any idea what is wrong?

Please check lamp in tv as pop sound seems broken lamp.
Did you replaced lamp in last 2-3 years in tv? If not, then its lamp that got broken and tv needs new lamp.
Lamp replacement procedure is written in user manual and its easy, please buy Sony original lamp for good picture in tv.

LAMP NEEDS TO BE REPLACED

The red light means that the prjection bulb needs to be replaced. They ony last about two years depending on hours of use. The low popping sounds as well as fan noise is normal for the Sony projection TV. You can Google the owners manual by entering the brand,model etc. and ask for the owner's manual. I had to go to several sites but eventually found it.

Your projector bulb burned out, easy to replace yourself

the color drive is going bad check with the sony service center it might be cover and repaired free.  my set went blue and the service tech is checking if it is covered.  good luck.

I think i have the same problem, but i can get audio still. did the poping plinking sound come from the inside back panel of your TV? it sounded almost like a arc wielding noise?
