i've just some digging around and found that you can access a service menu and perform a reset which sorted the issue for me.
Access the service menu by pressing, in order, whilst the tv is in stand-by mode:
info
menu
mute
power
when the tv comes back on you will have a service menu; select option 12 (reset) the tv will then switch off.
this will reset your TV back to factory defaults.
turn
tv back on and you should be prompted to go through the plug and play
setup again - go through everything and then all should start working
OK (it did for me)

I would believe from what you said, you have solved your problem. You will need a UHF antenna to receive the signal. Walmart or Radio Shack has a great amplified antenna that will work for you.

I would suggest calling your cable service provider. I just purchased the same TV and experienced the same problem/question. I have ATT Uverse and called and spoke with technical support. They said that you need a HDMI cable and the cable settings need to be set to HRC (High Resolution Compatible) or someting like that. The other 2 settings are analog modes! I had mine originally set to STD I just randomly picked this setting and had my TV conected to the cable box useing a coax cable, this is why it looked strange. I hope this helps? I will be picking up a HDMI cable on my way home from work today and will change my cable setting on my Samsung to HRC. If this does not fix the problem I will repost tomorrow, but I am sure this is the solution. Happy viewing!
