I have a Denon AVR2307 to which is connected,via optical audio and component video a DVD player/recorder and this works well but in order to take some of the work off the player part I've bought another (LG) DVD player which has HDMI as well as component video and optical and coaxial audio outputs.My question is how can I hook it up to the AVR ? My first attempt was using the HDMI connection but this didn't work,presumably because the connection to the TV is by component cables.I've tried connecting component cable to the VCR input and get nothing.I did assign the VCR1 to RCA . What it comes down to I suppose is - can 2 DVD players be connected to the AVR with surround sound ? Any thoughts would be appreciated.I should point out that I have no technical knowledge,but you've probably gathered that already. With thanks John M.Platts Christchurch .

This will depend on the Blue ray player and other equipment. For a direct connection to the receiver, if your player has either type of digital audio output (coaxial or optical), get the appropriate cables. Then connect the chosen cable between the Blue ray player and the receiver. Connect the Blue ray player to the TV with an HDMI cable. See page 10 of the manual, available at http://pdfstream.manualsonline.com/6/69f43064-f593-49b8-8d4a-23174b496e65.pdf , to see the connections for the audio sources. (I'll assume your Blue ray player doesn't have component video out or you would use the component audio to the receiver.)

If your player doesn't have a digital audio output, check your TV audio output. You can get the same result by sending the videos via HDMI to the TV and using the TV audio out to the receiver. Set the audio source to TV and leave it there for both TV and Blue ray and DVD videos. (Sometimes there could be a slight delay in the audio compared with the video signal when you do this. I've never noticed it with my Blue ray player signal going to the TV and the TV digital audio out to the Denon receiver.)

If you can't send the audio out to the receiver from either your Blue ray player or TV, then you will need some sort of HDMI audio extractor. You can find models with Analog Audio Out, Digital Audio Out or both. ( https://www.amazon.com/J-Tech-Digital-Extractor-Converter-JTDAT5CH/dp/B00BIQER0E lists units with both types of audio output. One models requires a 3.5 mm to RCA audio adapter.)

Yes you can, but if you dont have optical output on you're Denon AVR try using you're player's(dvd/bluray) optical out to the wireless headphones

That is correct. Digital connections through some models of SACD players are via "firewire", otherwise it is analog output. There are no optical connections.

The shortest pair of RCA cables, or even component video cable as an alternative will work.

There is a button on the front of the unit under Input its a mode button press this button to select auto that should give you sound

A wiring Schematic is not that you should be looking. What you need is large feeders to understand hot to connect to various ports to give your desired output.

Suggestions:

1. Reset to default values. Per page 36 of manual: 1. Turn off Power. 2. Press Power while simultaneously pressing Speaker A and Speaker B. 3. Once the display starts flashing at intervals of about 1 second, release the two buttons.

2. Make sure you have AM or FM radio reception. This makes sure your speakers, amps, etc are connected and working correctly.

3. Connect DVD player to HDMI 1 in and TV to HDMI Monitor Out.
Play a known good DVD that works when you connected the DVD directly to the TV via HDMI.

Select the DVD/HDP input on the receiver and play the DVD. You should not have to perform any input assignments, etc. It should just work, as HDMI1 is the default system setting for DVD.

4. If possible, obtain a STB with HDMI out & repeat step 3 using the HDMI2 TV/CBL input. Keeping the signal path all digital (HDMI) will give you a better picture quality than forcing several analog to digital conversions (component video is analog).

4A. To use the component connection, first test by connecting the STB directly to the TV via component video/audio if possible. This tests that the component video output of the STB is working correctly.

Next, remove direct connection and connect via receiver. Connect STB to receiver as shown on page 13 in manual. Connect component video output from STB to component video input #2 (tv/cbl) on receiver. Connect the STB audio output to the corresponding tv/cbl audio inputs.

Make sure nothing is connected to the HDMI2 input or to any other TV/CBL inputs (composite video, s-video, digital coax audio).

Now select the TV/CBL input and turn on the STB. You should have both audio & video.

The best possible solution to your problem is :
Connect your blu ray player directly to the HDMI input of you Plasma and watch HD video....
and connect the 5.1/7.1 sound thru the optical or the coaxial link directly to your AVR 3805.
You will not loose anything on the Blu-Ray.
The sound is best processsed by the AVR3805, while the video, which is the real upgrade (BluRay) in terms of resolution of picture would be processed by your plasma.

Do you have your TV hooked up, so you can see the AVR-4800 system menu on its screen (if not, see the manual). You need to go down to the digital input menu item where you associate each component with its input source, whether it is coax, optical 1, optical 2, ..., etc.

The 2801 (I used to have a 2803) is just an AV receiver, so it doesn't do any video processing.

If you get a DVD player with HDMI or DVI output, you'll be better off doing what you said - bypass the receiver for video and connecting the video directly to your TV, and the audio to your receiver.

It makes things less convenient since you can't switch inputs only with the receiver's remote, but you'll get a much better picture.

If you really need to control the whole system with a single remote, consider getting a Logitech Harmony remote or something similar. They're very convenient.

This reciever does not decode the audio through HDMI, the HDMI ports are simply a pass-through. To get audio you need to connect an optical audio cable from the PS3 to the reciever also. I figured this out after 2 hours of trying to get audio from the HDMI cable. Here is a link that shows the different audio formats supported through HDMI by the different Denon models. It looks like the AVR-788 is the lowest model that supports audio through HDMI. Hope that helps.
