Who diagnosed the bearing as being bad? Are you sure it's a bearing? If you're talking about the rear tub bearing, this is very maintenance intensive job, that requires the replacement of the rear tub shell and tub seal at a minimum. Depending on the wear, you may also require replacement of the front tub shell, spinner bracket, spinner basket, pulley and/or drive belt. All together with labor charges, I've seen this repair job exceed $900. If you have a maintenance plan or extended warranty this repair would be covered under normal wear and tear. I know it's discouraging, but I hope this provides with some answers you were looking for.Who diagnosed the bearing as being bad? Are you sure it's a bearing? Worth Not much as life expectancy on most new appliance is 4 years or less ,it called plan obsolescence or made to fail as economy is based on consumerism not quality
Having been down that road, I regret to say it's not an easy fix. As a lifelong DIY guy (read cheapskate) I used a disassembly procedure I found on the web and discovered that the bearing mentioned in another response was just fine, but the "spider" that attaches the SS drum to the axle had been severely corroded by soap and time: one of the 'legs' had completely broken, causing the drum to spin eccentrically, which incidentally also caused the tub enclosure to rub a hole, causing the leak. The only GOOD news is that the SS drum is warranted for life (the spider and bearing are not available separately), so I got a replacement assembly from Whirlpool at no charge. Even better news (for us) was that the Duet was just a few weeks less than 10 yrs old, which also meant the tub was still covered by warranty, so we got one of those at no charge as well. But unless you're also an adept DIY person, and can enlist a helper to both remove and reinstall the tub assembly (it is quite heavy and ungainly), I'd recommend biting the bullet and buying new: the cost of a repair service, even if the parts are free, may not make it worth fixing a 10+ yr old washer. Here is the Whirlpool website to use, which includes the phone number. Put your model number (the one in your query above is missing the last digit) in the search box to see the parts diagrams that will help you understand the responses you're getting.

This has turned out to be a common problem with Duets. Browsing the web will turn up all manner of blogs, including some that will give you step-by-step instructions for the DIY fix. Best of luck.
Yes, that is a good price for a main bearing repair. I wouldn't recommend it. I would buy either a whirlpool top load washer with and agitator ( we are doing to many repairs on the wp washers without agitators), or I would buy the super capacity front load duet. You will save more money in the long run with the front loader. Both of these have been the best washers built in the last 30 years. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists
The symptoms that you describe are caused by bearing failure. The water seal in the wash tub has failed, allowing water to leak into the bearing causing the bearings to rust. As the bearings start to rust, they will not roll properly and start to make a rumbling sound. The sound get louder the faster the bearing turns.
It a major job to repair since the washer has to be taken apart and the wash drum needs to be removed to replace the seal and bearings. Get a few estimates before deciding whether the washer is worth the cost to repair or replace. Sorry.
I have a duet sport whirlpool two years old. The hose from the dispenser to the tub is frayed and broken allegedly due to worn out shocks (after two years?) The repair guy says $289 to fix a hose. Unbelievable! Could it be a design issuue?
go buy new washer the drum bearings have gone and it really is not worth repairing . it can be repaired but always found that it never lasts long once done.
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I CALLED THE 800 NUMBER AND HAD WHIRLPOOL SEND ME ALL OF THE PARTS THAT WERE STILL UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT I PURCHASED. WHIRLPOOL SENT ME EVERY PART, INCLUDING THE STAINLESS TUB, THAT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. I NOW HAVE REPLACED ALL INTERNAL PARTS EXCLUDING THE MOTOR.
