Canon PIXMA MP140, refilled cartridge don't work

  • 4 more comments
  • ben2talk May 21, 2008

After refilling the cartridges, the printer continues to see the ink as empty. Need a way to reset the chip, or (if I buy new cartridges) fix them so they won't be written to by the printer - so there will be no ink warning and it's up to me to make sure they're refilled.

Best solution i think
How to reset the Canon MP150 (also worked with my MP140 so it might work with others as well) after a refill (Step 10 concerns refill; instructions below the steps):
Method1 (Safe Factory Method):
1) Disconnect the printer’s power outlet
2) Press and hold the power button while connecting the power outlet back.
3) While still holding down the power button, press the reset button twice.(red circle with a triangle)
4) Release the power button
Printer takes about 10 seconds to show the number 0.
5) Press + to change the value from 0 to 1.
6) When this value is 1, press colour button; this will light up two leds.
One is for plain paper and the other for photo paper. At this point is feed Printer with paper.
7) Press the power button twice and then press the colour button once. The printer will print a some stuff. Don’t worry much about the printed material. I got some stripped lines and some numbers. I believe that my colour cartridge is clogged which explains why I got the green strips.
When you print this sheet the value in the display returns to zero.
8 ) Open Printer's cover cover (not the scanner cover) and remove the cartridges. With Printer still open, disconnect the power outlet.
9) Close the lid and turn on The printer.
10) Refill cartridges and place them back in their nice little abode in The printer.

Hi i have a mp145 and i use refilled cartridge working great for me i only have to hold the stop reset button for 5 seconds and printer work again but the ink level check dont work, but i have to live with that. original cartride will be more expensive than the printer cost..if a error E5 shows up i think it have to do with bad contact inside the cartridge holder, only solution is to remove the cartridge and insert again should work great
thx ake

I'm having a similar problem with a PIXMA iP1800... I bought a refilled Canon PG37 black ink cartridge at the weekend and now the printer software will not recognise either of the cartridges... not the new one nor the refilled CL38 colour cartridge that I put in it weeks ago ( and which was working fine until I added the black cartridge ).

I know it's because the printer is trying to read an electronic 'tag' on the cartridge... but any ideas how to over ride this irritation?

I have my business and had been facing a lotof loss due to this functional error hus i would not recoment any one of you to buy this series printer, scanner unless you thoroughly verify these things...................... I LOST FAITH IN CANNON...

I have trouble sometimes after refilling cartridges. I have three holes in the top where I inject the ink - I use rubber gloves to keep my hands clean and I use Blu Tac and have a spare syringe with no needle attached.

If you put ink in, and it's not printing, first you can blow the ink through using a syringe with blutac to make a seal - just push a few cc's of air in there to pressurise the ink until it comes out of the print head. I use tissue to blot it, then put it in the printer and print out a few copies of my colour printing test sheet (a .png image I downloaded). Sometimes I have to clean it a few times, waste some ink, refill, mess around - one time it took me around 40 minutes - but usually it's just a matter of it getting airlocked and sometimes it's tough to get the heads clean.

It doesn't need resetting - ignore flashing lights and warnings - just keep printing. I had Black and Colour ink lights flashing for months now - I print at least 20 full page A4 pictures every week in windows and linux - no problems.

Why bother to take out the cartridges. Power up the printer, when the ink cartridges begin their travel from their home position to the left immediately switch of the mains socket, This will leave the cartridges mid-way or wherever you want them. Now you can use a cordless drill and proceed to make the necessary holes in the cartridge. Fill with about 4ml of ink ( essential that you do not fill to much as it will overflow into the machine. Fit holes with rubber bungs, switch printer back on at mains and away you go. Although it will still show ink level alarms it will work - this way you have not removed the chip from the printer. Been doing this for months with no problems

B4 u refil dont take cartridge out by the normal means.get the black front cover off which is snapped on.then unscrew the right hand side panel and take it off. u will see the cartridges resting there.take them out.u may hav to snap/bend a bit of plastic which is obstructing the further cartridge from coming out.u may hav to push cartridge holder to the left(along its track) very slightly to get the first cartrige out. then refil and place back. doing it this way makes the printer think that no cartridge has been taken out. if u hav already taken cartridge out and there is error 5.then put another cartidge(new or old which does not show e5).then do the above and swap the cartidges around.the printer will not b aware of this. do this everytime u need to refil

Salve il mio computer non legge il cd per installare la canon pixma mp 140

The whole problem revolves around the fact that there isn't any way available to me to reset the chip. Trying with an original means paying the CANON prices, the whole point of refilling is to avoid that, and when a Guest named Apprentice says my answer is stupid, it reflects more upon his useful input.

The fact is that I CAN PRINT with refilled ink, but each time I have to over-ride the machine settings that tell me it's empty, hold down reset and it prints. Better than paying through the arse.

Thanks for your opinion, but for me to get a full cartridge, I bought 200ml ink bottles for $2 each. $6 dollars will refill my colour cartridges enough times to save me at least 4 or 5 purchases of the new item. Savings - you work it out. Enjoy your original ;) if I want photo quality, it's cheaper to go to the shop and get better quality from an expensive printer.

Here's the solution from Canon USA:

Issue: Banded or streaked prints
Solution: Print Head Alignment MP530

Perform Print Head Alignment Instructions to perform a Print Head Alignment directly from the machine. If diagrams or ruled lines are misaligned, print head alignment is required. The print head alignment can be performed automatically or manually. If the automatic print head alignment does not work, adjust the print head manually. Automatic Print Head Alignment

  1. Press <ON/OFF> to turn on the machine.

  2. Load a few sheets of letter-sized plain paper in the auto sheet feeder.

  3. Press the Open button to open the Paper Output Tray. Then open up and set the extension by pressing down the hollow on the front side.

  4. Execute automatic print head alignment.
    1. Press <COPY> button.
    2. Press <Menu> repeatedly to select [MAINTENACE].
    3. Press the left or right cursor to select [AUTO HEAD ALIGN], then press the <OK>. (A pattern is printed and the print head is automatically aligned. It takes about five minutes to finish printing the pattern.)

      05sj00165_02.jpg

Manual print head alignment
  1. Press <ON/OFF> to turn on the machine.

  2. Load two sheets of Letter-sized plain paper in the auto sheet feeder or cassette.

  3. Ensure that the proper paper source is selected.

  4. Execute manual print head alignment.
    1. Press <Menu> repeatedly to select [MAINTENACE].
    2. Press the left or right cursor to select [ALIGN PRINT HEAD], then press the <OK>. (The nozzle check pattern is printed.)

  5. Check the printed patterns and use the left or right arrow to input the number of the pattern in column A that has the least noticeable streaks.

    mp530_setvalue.gif

  6. Press <OK> to move the cursor to column B, and then use the left or right arrow to input the number of the pattern that has the least noticeable streaks.

  7. Repeat the procedure until you finish inputting the pattern number for column P.

    mp500_align_from_unit_1.jpg

  8. When you have finished inputting all pattern numbers, press <OK>.

Note: For columns A through N select the patterns with the least visible vertical streaks. For columns O and P select the patterns with the fewest visible horizontal streaks.

SOURCE: Cannot instal canon pixma MP140 have CD but not

Yes, you may.

Go to: MP140 Support

Click on the Drivers & Downloads tab. Select your operating system from the drop down menu.

All available software will then be listed for you to download.

The easiest thing to do when the download window appears is to Save the file to your desktop and run it from there. That is, if you are not comfortable saving it to another location, such as a Temp folder.

If you need any further help, just use the Comment button.

Thanks for using Fixya.

Hello, the printer Canon Pixma MP140 has cartridges with no chips. The printer reads the serial from the cartridge and tells you an estimated ink level. My recomandation is to press the resume/cancel buton for at least 10 seconds, that being the method to cancel the ink counter. After you press the resume/cancel buton you will be able to print, scan and copyas you did before.
The only disadvantage is that your printer will never show the ink level for this set of refilled cartridges, but it will work as well as brand new cartridges.

Canon Pixma 510 black cartridge

I doubt it very much! Your model seems to use the PG40 & CL41. You can also use PG50 & CL51.
See also my tip on refilling these cartridges.

Coloured ink not registering

You can only refill those cartridges if you do it before the ink is empty. After that you need a new cartridge or a chip resetter to reset the chip on the cartridge so it will work again.

MP140 can't recognise the black cartridge that I've just installed. Error code 4 - any ideas? I've tried the manual - nothing, and not much luck online - Thanks

Error code 4 normally indicates that there is no unk, and the solution is by installing a genuine cartridge, Try to use Black PG40 remanufactured Canon printer ink cartridge. This cartridge is a high capacity cartridge which has been filled with 23ml of ink compared with the 16ml (Black) that you get with the originals. Compatible with: Canon Pixma MP140. if this error still occur it is better that you try the following procedure below:-

When you insert a refilled ink cartridge into your Pixma MP140 printer you should get a warning about the refilled cartridge. You should also be prompted, asking if you wish to disable ink level detecting. Agree to do so, and you won’t get the warnings again because the ink levels won’t be monitored by the printer.

Thanks

I have a pixma mp10 scaner and printer it will not scan the light flashes E and 6. What can I do to fix this? Barbara Nash

Halo Barbara,
Did you mean Pixma MP140/160/150/170/180?. I never hear Canon pixma MP10. Well,it doesn't matter. Did you refill your cartridge?. Error code E6 indicates that ink level is not detected properly by the printer. It usually occurs in refilled cartridge. To fix this problem you need to deactivate ink level detection function by performing following procedure:
For MP150/160/170/180: Press START button (Black or Colour)
For MP140: Hold down STOP/RESET button for about 9 seconds

Please rate me as Fixya if this solution useful for you. Thanks

Reset ink level on CANON MP 140 PIXMA PRINTER

How to reset the Canon MP150 after a refill (Step 10 concerns refill; instructions below the steps):
Method1 (Safe Factory Method):
1) Disconnect the printer’s power outlet
2) Press and hold the power button while connecting the power outlet back.
3) While still holding down the power button, press the reset button twice.(red circle with a triangle)
4) Release the power button
The printer takes about 10 seconds to show the number 0.
5) Press + to change the value from 0 to 1.
6) When this value is 1, press colour button; this will light up two leds.
One is for plain paper and the other for photo paper. At this point is feed the printer with paper.
7) Press the power button twice and the printer will print a some stuff (if it doesn't print by itself, then press the "color" button once and the test sheet will print). Don’t worry much about the printed material. I got some stripped lines and some numbers. I believe that my colour cartridge is clogged which is why I got the green strips.
When you print this sheet the value in the display returns to zero.
8 ) Open the printer cover cover (not the scanner cover) and remove the cartridges. With the printer still open, disconnect the power outlet.
9) Close the lid and turn on the printer.
10) Refill cartridges and place them back in their nice little abode in the printer.
