I have a cannon sd1000 , bought 1 month back. suddenly its stopped capturing pictures. i.e while in shot mode the display is black and not showing and capturing the image.but able to access al the menus. while in preview mode able to view the images already taken.
After some inspecting of the camera it seen the issue lies with the lens, not the camera itself so don't go banging the camera up or you might damage some other part and the camera will be broken for real. Inside the lens is a closer which block the internal system from capturing image. The closer look just like the one you see before turning on your camera but it's smaller and it's inside the lens way in the far back. Look carefully and you'll see it - you will see the closer if your screen is black while in capture mode otherwise you will see a nice round glass (the internal lens for capturing image/video).
Think of if like this, imagine an eyeball with its eyelid close. That's what happened when the screen is black while in capturing mode.
HOW TO FIX IT: In order to fix the black screen while in capture mode and cost as little damage to your camera as possible, simply turn on the camera in either picture or video mode and look inside your lens, there should be a closer in the far back end. Gently hit the lens a few times until you don't see the closer no more and only a round glass and your camera should begins capturing image and video again.
Good luck to you all. And remember don't use anger to force your camera to works or you will regret it.

Canon PowerShot SD1000
I just tried the whack solution, it really worked!!!
I smacked the side of the camera to my palm twice while being skeptical, but the display screen light up when I turn on the camera. Wow... what do you know... I just hope I didn't damage anything else...
Hey i had the same problem, just push the DISP. button just to the right of the display... goodluck, HTH
That worked like a charm. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!! Now, if only the flash would work. lol
Pressing the display button did the trick. Thanks!
P.S. I've had my camera for 6 years and no problems with it. Still works great aside from this minor mishap. Lucky me!

I have had the same exact problem, and have found that the best way to fix it is to constantly turn the camera on and off. Be patient, and eventually it should come back to normal.
I am amazed after spending hours browsing the internet and trying all kinds of troubleshooting what fixed my sony a330 was a 30 sec simple solution...thanks for posting the solution
Your screen goes blank? sure is ****, whack it a few times on a table, it will work. I was just holding mine and it went blank, i thought it was spanked for sure but after reading peoples comments about this problem i did just that. Whacked it and now the stupid camera works again. What a relief !
Worked with me too, a few whacks against the palm of my hand. Amazing how something that is used as slapstick comedy can actually work.
Unreal. After reading several responses to this problem I thought what have I got to lose? So I smacked it and like magic my screen image reappeared. Thanks everybody'

That is utterly ridiculous, but it totally works. I had been able to push the display button and utilize a different setting for about a week before ALL display modes went black. After that, smacking the camera on my palm is the only thing that has worked.
Shame on Canon for this though. These are expensive cameras and we all have to give them a good whack to get them to work.
Hi, I just followed all the post. just hit the camera against a wall slightly and tried it..did not start. tried it 2-3 times and then it worked. i think the lens cover was creating the problem. thanks all it works now.
Had the same problem as all you guys, So I wacked the camera one time on the front and power on again I was able to take pictures again.
Having the same problem, Ive tried clicking display button and banging a bit but it doesn't work so I turn on and off quickly then back on - it works! I guess the problem is the retracting len that got stuck when it was turned on and off quickly.
I had the same problem and slightly banged on a piece of wood, it came back on.............
Kevin

We have the same problem. All of a sudden it started doing this. We did not drop it or anything.
I have the identical problem. However, all images recorded prior to this problem occurring can be viewed in playback mode. I had the camera for the same length of time....Interesting!!!!
yea i am having the same problem... Â its only black when in shot mode, any other time its fine... Â wonder why??
same problem and the display button will not fix. It will still try to take a picture but the image captured is black
Same issue as all of the others- tried turning it off and on- tried the display button and still nothing- anyone fixed theirs yet?
i have the EXACT same problem. anyone fix theirs? i just contacted cannon and am waiting for a response.
The exact same thing happened to me... I was just holding it, and now neither the video nor the picture mode works... the display is on. When I take pictures its just black but the ones I took prior to this problem still show up. I've had a for just under a month
While on picture mode it just show a black screen and when I go to the display modeit shows the images I took.
When I try to take pictures it show a all black screen and when I go to display mode it shows images that I have taken in the past
I have the same problem. The display is turned on, but is black. Will act like it is capturing a photo when I take a picture, but does not capture anything. Anyone find a solution or get a response from Canon?
I have the same problem mine is pretty new too. It just stopped working I cant take any pics. I am able to access menus and playback pics. Interesting I think is a manufacturers malfunction
This just happened to me too. Just purchased the camera at the end of June. Camera has worked fine up until this past weekend.
All of a sudden, the display went black. The camera will act like it's taking a picture, but the result is just black.
I can still view all the menus, pictures taken previously (when camera was working properly...the ones taken while display is black turn out black), videos, etc.
And I've pressed the Display button to see if it was just in power save mode but no dice.
I had the same problem. Black screen, but could see menus and view previously taken pictures. I think the lens is jammed shut. It has been suggested on other forums that this is caused by turning off the camera and then before the lens is fully retracted, turning it on again. I played with it for awhile (off, on, off, on, etc -- & cleaned the lens). It finally is working again. Someone on another board said they gave theirs a whack on hard surface and it unjammed it. I did not try that.
A good (gentle) whack on the sides of the camera worked each time.
i m having the same problem as described
i got canon 2 months ago
please assist
thanks
Same problem as all have mentioned..please help
i have been trying to take pics but the images are shown black or blank. the menus and previous pics are showing.
My screen has the same problem as well. Has anyone found a solution?
My camera screen just got totally black. Please help. I can still see other photos which were taken before but the capture screen is just pitch black.
Camera was working fine and then just went blank.
Hit it a few times and now it works fine...Thanks
I too had the same problem, I tried to fix this by clicking the display button, but it fails. Then I press on-off button alternatively many times, it also fails. Then Finally I whacked my cannon on both sides. My goodness!! Its working fine. I was so surprised. Thanks for everyone who posted the tricks to fix this.
i have a cannon sd1000 , bought 1 month back. suddenly its stopped capturing pictures. i.e while in shot mode the display is black and not showing and capturing the image.but able to access al the menus. while in preview mode able to view the images already taken.
black screen....hit it three times on a table...worked immediately!!!
The screen on the inside is showing colored lines, and black dots. It reminds me of what a screen might look like after dropping it onto the ground, and it breaking. But when you turn the camera off it looks fine. It still takes pictures but you can't see the picture after you take it. You have to preview the pictures on your computer. I didn't ever drop my camera, and i kept it in a case until i use it. I only got it Christmas. Do you know whats wrong? and how i can fix it?
I have the exact same problem as mentioned with display black in shot mode, and as a last resort i tried hitting it with palm of my hand and to my suprise it started to work againe. Thanks to the previouse users comments.
Same problem- black screen, but all menu options were visable. Smacked it with my palm and poof- it works! hooray! My warranty was out 2 months ago and Cannon wanted $100 to fix it... don't do it!
This really works....I had the same problem. I wacked the camera a couple of times on the front and now I am taking pics!! Thanks! :)
I have had this same problem with my camera. It was already sent to canon once to fix blurry pictures. (long story short with that, they did not handle the problem professionally and I am not happy with their service) I have been looking at new cameras, but after reading these postings I gave my camera a few wacks and it started working again. There was a defective CCD imager in some of the older models, anyone think it's affecting these models as well?
all icons appear, but the camera is not registering any images on screen, and is not saving any images (just blackness). whacks do not solve my issue.
