HP DeskJet 1220c InkJet Printer Logo

HP Deskjet 1220C has started printing a series of vertical blotches and misaligned text in the same three places. Same problem with black or colour. Have aligned cartridges, cleaned fluff, etc, to no avail.

There might be a problem with the encoder: remove it, observe it closely with a magniying glass, and you have to see a vertical lines pattern all along the enconder, without no blurs or missing or erased parts on it. Try to clean it with alcohol and a cloth but be careful no to erase the patterns i described early. If there are missing lines in the pattern you'll need to replace.

What is the encoder? a strip of semitransparent plastic that goes in the back of the cartridge carriage.

Your suggestion was extremely helpful in resolving a very frustrating print head alignment problem that has plagued my 1220c for some time. I only did one thing differently. Not wanting to risk further damage to the printer by removing the encoding strip, I used a q-tip soaked in 70% rubbing alcohol to gently wipe both sides of the strip, then dried it with some a soft paper towel.
My misalignment issues appear completely resolved after that. Thank You for the answer.
