Hot surface light won't turn off. No burners are on and none are hot. Is there a short or something?

  • rdg51 Jan 31, 2009

same problem each burner has its own light how do yoy rplace sensor?

  • tmaddern Mar 10, 2009

Yup, hot surface indicator light will not turn off. It's not the end of the world if it burns out, but I'm wondering if more problems might arise because of it?

  • Anonymous Mar 29, 2009

I have a single light unit. I have removed all elements and the light still is on. Should it go out when the defective element is removed?

  • Walsh71 May 12, 2009

My Hot surface indicator lights will not go off either. The burner still works, so I will just not worry I guess.

The element contains a sensor to detect when the element is hot, these sensors fail. The element will have to be replaced. If there is only one light to indicate hot surface, you will have to determine which element has failed.

SOURCE: The hot surface indicator light remains ON all the time.

Your hot surface indicator light might have a short that causes it to stay on all of the time. If you can, try unplugging it for a little while and plugging it back up. If the light is still on, you have a short. You can still use the stove, but the light staying on will not be any help to you.

SOURCE: Hot surface indicator

The component that controls the hot surface light is part of the element. If there is a light for each element you just replace that element. If there's one for the whole surface or each side you'll have to figure out which element is causing the problem.

SOURCE: GE EVOLUTION Glass top. The hot surface(Glass top)

Individual burners, located directly under the cooktop glass, contain a temp sensor which lights up the hot surface lamp when they sense a hot condition. If the light stays on after all burners are cool, one of the sensors has shorted out. The sensors are an integral part of the burner, so the offending burner must be replaced to solve your constant on hot light.

Hot surface indicator light stay on?

One of your surface elements is bad (the hot-element switch that is part of the element is stuck on). If each element has its own hot-light, then you know which element is bad; but if you have just 1 hot-surface indicator, your problem is figuring out which element is bad. That takes an electronic technician with patience and an ohmmeter.

the hot surface indicator should go off when th temp of the unit has coled off enough to be touched.if it does not turn off then there is a more than likely a shorted wire.

I have a new ge range. When I turn on the left

mvek,
If you could see through the glass, you'd see "temperature sensors" located near the elements. They're very sensitive little guys, and rightly so! Their job is to detect temps and energize the warning light on the cooktop so users won't get burned.

To answer your question... It appears that there is an issue with the front left sensor (and possibly the right as well). The temp warning lamps should NEVER go off immediately. Please call for warranty repair (1-800-GE-CARES). This is an unsafe condition for you and your Family. The warning indicators are there for a reason and should indicate high temp's as long as high temp's are present.

If it's the light that indicated the element is on, replace the switch. If it's the light that indicated the element is hot, replace the element.

Surface unit indicator light is always on

Coffy, if you are talking about the hot surface indicator lights, they are controlled by the limiter on the burner itself. When the burner heats up the limiter closes and sends power to the light (hot surface). When the burner cools the limiter is supposed to open cutting power to the hot surface indicator light. They may be stuck closed. If you are talking about the lights on the back panel, that is controlled by the infinate switch itself. Catriver
