GE 31 Hi my bedroom TV the above mentioned model GE set has started acting up. The picture begins to shrink horizontally. The top comes down and the bottom comes up. It has gotten worse over the past month. From occasionally doing it to now doing it daily. It will after a bit go back to normal screen but than it will start shrinking again. It started by just shrinking about 5% on top and bottom and lately it has shrunk as much as 25% top and 25% bottom leaving just a picture shrunk half the size. Is this something I can fix easily myself? Is it a part that needs replacing? There doesnt seem to be a knob on back for horizontal and vertical adjustment. Or has the TV reached old age and is ready to die?

Picture cut off on sides, how do i shrink picture to screen?

If model listed is correct the problem is in power supply or vertical or horizontal circuits.

If cut off on sides (horizontal) and bowed on sides it is a pincussion problem. IF short top and bottom a vertical issue--if both it is in the power supply.

Model listed is rather old and parts may not be available for it.

My 31GT740 tv's picture is taking up to 5 minutes to come on...

There is possibly a loose solder joint in the horizontal drive circuit. There is a little coupling coil just before the horizontal output that will get loose. This should not be real expensive to have repaired.

NO PICTURE HAS SOUND

When you say small do you mean shrunk up top and bottom as well as from side to side. You definitely have a deflection problem either horizontal or vertical. If the picture just shrunk top and bottom you have a vertical deflection problem. Do you have the service manual for your model? If not let me know and I will email you one. Describe the shrinking issue a little more and I should be able to give you some guidance.

Picture larger than screen...

If you go to 4:3 mode and the picture is still cutoff then i would assume the tv has a problem with the horizontal or the pinchusion correction circuit . This would be the only two areas that would cause this problem . Check the format section of your menu to make sure it is not in zoom mode or otherwise if it is not then you have a problem with one of two above mentioned circuit problems . Good luck

Picture too wide for screen

your problem is called blooming as you might be aware of very high voltage in tv. you can check 1 high output voltage fron power supply. 2 if it is ok then the problem is in horizontal section.you can check cap.in hor. section at last flyback transformer. hope this will help.

Screen shrinks to 10 cm horizontal line

Yes, you are correct. Usually what I find in a set like that with that symptom is that the solder joints have cracked and come loose on the vertical output IC. That is the IC which drives the yoke coils that spread the picture up and down. If you have soldering experience then you can locate this IC and resolder its pins but if you have never worked on PC boards then have a qualified tech handle it for you. This is a very easy thing to repair so it should not cost too much.

Picture Shrinks

It is in the power supply or I would guess most likly in the horizontal sweep section of the tV set. MOST of the time, if the power supply is going lower in voltage, the set will shrink in width,BUT will also shrink in vertical size. If this is not happening, then I would say it is in the horizontal drive circuit. This is not a circuit a user should be experimenting with, as this is the HIGH VOLTAGE circuit and can pack a mean punch! Please if the sets less the 4 to 5 years old you may want to concider an estimate or replacing the set. Its all up to you. GOOD LUCK

Screen split with black bar through center, top of picture shows in bottom

It sounds as you desribe, the vertical output IC and or the b+ feed capacitor off the Hi voltage transformer feeding the vert. IC its required voltage. Not a really hard job to replace, but not for a handi person to do. This should be left to the professional, as there are no user serviceable parts inside this set and with the HI voltage and the safety issues its best to call somesone to assist you with this repair. Good Luck
