This is not a job for a beginner. I recommend you have the local repair shop do it.
If you must do it yourself, then here's how to do it.
Start by removing the mowing deck. Set it aside. Make sure to mark where all the hardware goes. Remove the center bolt from the from pulley stack. You will need an extension socket and probably an air powered impact gun. This will allow the pulley to lower enough to remove the front part of the belt. If the pulley is stuck, use a backside pulley puller to remove the stack pulley. Any other kind of puller will damage the stack pulley. Next, remove the lower steering gear and raise the steering comuln up about 4 inches. The gear is held on with a circlip. The tension pulleys will each need to be loosened to get the belt of and back on past the retainers. Completely remove the belt from the rear pully (transmission). Install in reverse order. The entire job should take about 1.5 hours.
Take pictures or draw diagrams before you start. It is helpful when reassembling.
Good luck!
Not as difficult as you put it to be. Im 18 years old and my friend, who's 17, put the belt on in a little under an hour with only the help you provided in the posting above. Would of been nice to of had a diagram but we figured it out by actually pulling the pulleys off and following the marks of the old belt. Are old belt broke yesterday so we couldn't use it as a guide for the new one. Most difficult part was getting around the steering column. Thanks for all the help.

Thanks for the answer 2strokeguy. It answered my question about how the belt goes around the steering shaft. I was thinking that it was installed on one side of the shaft, but I was wrong. thanks again. Robert
