Posted on Aug 29, 2010

I have a WCVH6400J0WW GE front loading washing machine. A very heavy load of towels was washed and threw the machine way off balance. The basket and the gasket around it have become dislodged. How do I fix it?

It's 2 1/2 yrs old. Doubt it's still covered by a warrenty. We were hoping to avoid having to call a repairman. Trying to save $, we are living on an extremely tight budget.

Washing machine won't go to spin cycle if there are towels in it

Washing machines have trouble if they are overloaded and the load gets out of balance. This occurs most often with towels. Open the machine and lift the towels out and put them back in evenly to get the load to finish. You will see how heavy they are when full of water. In future, try running with a few less towels and see if it works ok. You have found the other 'fix' by draining and running spin only which probably resettles the load.

When washing towels the load starts banging...not overloaded and repair service can't find the issue.

sounds like a broken shock,or balance spring!! possibly loose concrete weight on tub

Front loader tub out of balance

Try running the washer with a small load. Still out of balance? Call a technician.
A very large load or a load with one heavy item is hard to balance. For example, one pillow cannot be spun but two can. Lots of jeans may not spin well. Wash a towel with the jeans.
Check the manufacturer's website for more help.

I have a front loading GE washer that is extremely loud on spin cycle. How can i remedy this?

A washing machine may wiggle, rattle or move across the floor. It is often accompanied by excessive, or loud noise. There can be several causes and the problem is worse with some units more than others. The most common cause is an unbalanced wash load. Open the lid/door, and attempt to redistribute the clothing to balance the weight. Heavy loads, especially things like comforters, are more likely to become unbalanced than small loads. If you do a lot of heavy loads, you should consider a heavy duty/large capacity washer when it comes time to replace your current unit. A washer must be level both from side to side as well as from front to back. Washing machines have adjustable feet to enable you to level them. See your manual on how to level your washing machine. The outer tub/basket, is supported by springs, shocks, pistons or counterweights to keep it balanced. The weight of all that water in a wash load requires a powerful balancing mechanism. If the balancing system becomes detached from one or more points, it will not be able to balance the load properly. Furthermore, even if everything appears to be in place, as the appliance ages, the springs or pistons/shock absorbers, may begin to wear out and not support as much weigh as needed.

Unplug the washer and open the cabinet. Because of the variety of balancing mechanisms, you will have to inspect your machine to determine how it is balanced. Once you discover the mechanism, then inspect it for integrity. In the case of old parts that appear to be in working order, you may not be able to tell if they need to be replaced. They may be weak but appear to be in good condition. If no other solution resolves the problem, then replacing the balancing springs or other moving support parts may be the best action.Another common cause for excessive movement, or clunking, is the floor on which the washer rests. The washer is heavy and even more so when filled with water. Any floor, other than a concrete slab, will tend to pick up and amplify the vibrations from the machine. There are a couple things you can try. If you have access to the joists under the floor, you may be able to beef up the support. Another thing to try is placing a large sheet of plywood under the washer. It should be 3/4" or even 1" thick and as large as possible to distribute the weight. Use a sheet big enough for both the washer and dryer to sit on. If possible fasten the plywood to the existing floor.

NOTE_ Verify That the shipping system including shipping bolts, spacers and cables are removed. This is a common issue when a new washer is installed.

Beach towels sopping wet after machine done spinning

The washer will not proceed into high speed spin with just two large beach towels in the basket. The washer is detecting a out of balance condition, and remains in low speed spin. Solution? Try adding more items into the basket. With only two towels, there is not enough mass to balance the washer. With more clothing or towels, there is more items for the machine to balance, and reach full speed spin.

The only other thing that could cause this, would be if the water in the tub is not completely draining in the time allowed. This washe does not have a cleanout, and checking for an obtruction in the pump is difficult. I would go with the more clothes first, then see.
