your xp might be corrupted. try to repair your windows xp by inserting your Windows XP CD to the cd rom and run it from CD ROM then "REPAIR".

This is a typical sign of a defective hard drive.Your hard drive might or might not be repairable, depending on the degree of damage.
I would recommend that you use a live CD (such as this one: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html) to boot up your computer & run a hard disk diagnostic tool like HDD Regenerator. It might take several hours (sometimes days) to fix the damage. If this did not help, then you will have to replace the hard drive.

Windows system files have become corrupted. You can try to Repair your Windows or re-install a fresh copy using the Windows installation CD (for Repair choose R when prompted).

Hi,

When you put in the XP CD and it boots off the cd, the XP setup files copy across, and at the 1st screen, you should be able to choose Repair. Press r, and this will start the Recovery Console.

When you are in the recovery console, choose your Windows installation (You will see what I mean when you follow the instructions.)

When you are sitting at the command line(C:\>Windows), access your CDROM drive by typing the letter followed by a colon, eg "D:". It may also be E:, F:, or G:.

When you have changed to the CDROM drive, type the following:

cd\ <enter>
cd\i386 <enter>
expand pci.sy_ C:\pci.sys <enter>
C: <enter>
cd\ <enter>
copy pci.sys C:\windows\system32\drivers <enter>
If it asks to replace, confirm.

Then restart the computer.

You have two ways to solve the problem of "Pci.sys Is Missing or Corrupt"
Error Message When You Start Windows.

1.Booting with WinXP CD to access the Recovery Console’s Repair option,
and then copy from WinXP CD the missing or damaged Pci.sys file to
Systemdrive:\Windows\System32\drivers folder , Exit and Reboot.

start the recovery console and type:
set AllowAllPaths = true
expand d:\i386\pci.sy_ c:\windows\system\drivers32 /y
If you don't type
set AllowAllPaths = true you can't access the windows folder.

2. Booting with WinXP CD and then perform a Windows XP Repair Reinstall
of the currently installed system.
