Is there a cable out there I can connect my HI8 to my laptop so I can edit on the computer???
You'll need a third party device. Hi-8 is an analog format so there is no digital out. You'll need to purchase an "analog to digital" converter. Get one with "Firewire" out if you want real time capturing to your computer for best quality. The USB capture devices are inexpensive but convert at a lower quality... good enough for a DVD copy but not really edit quality. An example for high quality transfer would be the Canopus ADVC300.
You can also use a DV camcorder . Some higher end models have analog to digital conversion built in. Go analog (S-video connecter + audio) out of your Hi-8 and patch to the "analog in" on the digital camcorder. Connect the firewire out of the digital camcorder to the computer.

I have heard this works, going to try one today, I have tried EVERYTHING else, downloading drivers, diffferent programs, firewire cords, so I think this will work, when I googled our specific camcorder, this matches, also, some people are selling the exact sony camcorder on ebay with this included, stating they have used it to connect to their pc. Hope this helps.
