I don't understand why the message "toner life end" keeps flashing even after I've installed a new toner cartridge. I followed all the instructions on the package and the message doesn't go away.

If the Toner LED is still on, or the status monitor continues to display the message "Toner Life End" after installing a new toner cartridge, verify you are using a genuine Brother toner cartridge.
The yield of the TN starter toner cartridge is approx. 1,000 pages. The yield of the TN330 toner cartridge is approx. 1,500 pages. The yield of the TN360 toner cartridge is approx. 2,600 pages. Approximate cartridge yield is declared in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752(Letter/A4).
Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.
1. Verify you installed a NEW, out of the box, genuine Brother toner cartridge (TN360/TN330).
If a toner cartridge from another machine was installed (even if there?s still toner left in the used cartridge) or a starter toner cartridge (included with the purchase of a machine) was installed, the Toner LED will stay on and the message "Toner Life End" would continue to appear on the display.
2. Verify the toner cartridge is installed correctly by following the steps listed below:
a. Open the front cover by pulling the tabs on the left and right side of the printer towards you.
b. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. Place the drum unit on a piece of disposable paper or cloth to avoid spilling and scattering the toner.
c. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the lock lever (blue tab) on the left side of the drum unit and lift the toner out. Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.
d. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.
e. Place the toner cartridge into the drum (be sure it clicks into place).
f. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab on the top of the cartridge from right to left several times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.
g. Reseat the drum unit into the printer pressing it in securely.
h. Close the front cover making sure it latches on both sides.
If the Toner LED is still on or the status monitor continues to display the message "Toner Life End" the printer will need service.
The printer has a one year limited exchange warranty. If the printer is in warranty, call Brother Customer Service at 1-877-Brother (1-877-276-8437) for warranty options.
Here is the solution that will reset the count and allow your fully
functional toner cartridge (the one the printer tells you is empty) to
continue to work.
Open the front cover. Press options button. Press
the start button. Press + or up arrow button 10 times. Press set
button.
You have to do this with a long pause or the system will
reset and you will have to start over.
You shoul still be able to do a printer test print (press the arrow button).
Look on the printed pagesfor Toner AND Photoconductor.
These show as OK when new or very low count, and 100% when fully used.
If the toner is showing as 100% when you've just replaced it, either the chip is faulty, the wrong one, or if the cartridge is a remanufactured one possibly nor been replaced.
I first used the electrical tape trick and that worked for a while.
Then got the toner low message again. I then tried the *00 trick, which works as
follows:
1. lift lid and open front cover 2. press clear/back.
"Replace Drum?" will appear on the screen. 3. Press "*00" it will then read
accepted and the toner low error (End of Toner Life) should go away. 4. close
it all up and your done.
I just solved my own problem. Try it for yours. I had been using several compatible toners for the MFC-8460N with no problems until today, as I posted earlier. On a hunch, I went to the local office supply store and purchased one original Brothers TN550 toner and put it into the printer and closed the cover. Everything clicked. Toner End Life message gone. I then took that Brother toner out and put the compatible one back in and still everything was fine. Am keeping the original Brother toner as a "kickstarter" if it happens again.
