Coleman 321B lantern - When the lantern is "pumped" it does not generate preasure. The leather on the pump is OK, gives expected resitance and air is pushed out the pump handle hole if you remove your thumb.

SOURCE: coleman lanterns as collectibles

Coleman Collectors Guide 1903-1954.

Tucker & Ebebdorf

ISBN 0-9651407-0-9

This is an excellent reference with lots of pictures etc., it does not give the prices, however.

You can check Ebay for completed prices if you need an idea of value.

I have not found a book yet with accurate values on Coleman lanterns.

SOURCE: how to light coleman lantern

Kerosene lanterns require a little more than just lighting the mantles. Go to Coleman's website and find the directions (for free) for KEROSENE lanterns. The generator on the lantern needs to be preheated with alcohol before it will actually light. Make sure lantern is a Kerosene lantern and not a white gas (Coleman fuel) type, there is a difference even though they look similar.

SOURCE: When I pump up the Green Thumb two gallon sprayer,

You add oil in the two holes to lubricate the seals around the pump shaft. Maybe the seals have dried up now and that is why the air leaks by.

My coleman powerhouse dual fuel lantern brightens and dims continuously. could this be the generator acting up?

Hi bradley m925...
Try using the cleaner for the generator, it is a twist type crank, make a few turns on it if you have it.
If not then your right, replace the generator as it is faulty.

I cant get any petrol to pump into the mantles

If the petrol doesn't come through first check that you have enough in the tank. If the tank is not full enough it won't come through. If it still fails to come through it's likely that the generator is blocked. This is the tube which the mantle sits on and it has a very narrow opening to force the petrol to convert to vapour when it's warm. Try heating it for a while and it may clear it. Otherwise you'll need to buy a new generator.

Note: while the dual fuel lanterns can burn petrol you should be aware that it gives off poisonous fumes, like cars did before they had catalytic converters. The lantern should not be used indoors with petrol. They are safe with coleman fuel. If you live in the USA, Coleman fuel is cheap but if you're in Europe it's much too expensive. Rather than buying a new generator, if you live in Europe, you could buy a parafin burning lantern like the Petromax 500 available from http://www.pelam.de/index.php?cPath=28_31&language=en&gclid=CIOe46DQnqYCFQkf4QodQxz2Zg
and other sites, or you can pick up second hand Optimus lanterns on Ebay. Both burn parafin, though they need to be primed, and provide at least as much light as the Coleman.

My northstar lantern lites then goes out within 20 to30 seconds. Is it the generator? and if so what # generator do I need? The lantern is about 8 years old and used once or twice a year.

If the problem is that it loses pressure quickly (that is, you have to pump it up again and then it will light briefly), the problem is most likely the cap. It has a rubber gasket underneath that has probably dried out and isn't giving you a good seal. These caps are common replacement items, all the same size, available at Walmart, Kmart, etc. Another likely culprit is old fuel. Many years ago (like 30) the fuel lasted nearly forever. But sometime since then, the fuel has been reformulated making it work better in the short term, but having a limited shelf-life. If your fuel is more than a year or two old, try some new fuel.

I have a Coleman 228F model lantern. When I go to light it, it barely produces any gas. I have made sure it is pumped adequetly and full of new fuel. I can hear gas coming out very faintly and sometimes...

It's likely that it was left away with fuel in it. This causes gel to form which blocks the fuel getting through. The blockage could be anywhere between the tank and the mantles. The order I would check in are;
  1. The feed tube assembly
  2. The generator
  3. The Burner
It's possible to get these parts from coleman or coleman suppliers. To find which needs replacing you'd need access to another similar lantern and try replacing one at a time. Otherwise it's going to be trial and error or just replace all.

There's a manual which shows the assembly and the order number for parts at http://www.coleman.com/coleman/images/pdf/220f_228F.pdf
I hope this is of some help.

My coleman dual fuel lantern wont let me pressure the fuel up with the plunger

Remove the plunger and oil the leather diaphram with light oil similar to 3 in 1 oil, and expand the diaphram until it is no longer stiff and contracted. If you do not know how to remove the plunger let me know.

Hi i have found a coleman lamp in the loft in good condition i want to use it for myself for fishing , but it does not preasure when i try and pump it could you help coleman 201 use generator 201-5891...

The leathers have dried out, the new replacements don't always fit the older lamps, you can buy the parts at Walmart, easily replaced, but getting the new parts to seat right takes a while, be patient, it'll get going after a couple blisters. Check the mantles while you are at it and pick up a couple of them, you'll need them. And some fresh gas.
