Technics SL-23 belt driven turntable (NOT SL-1210 but I had to enter something)

I have a problem with my turntable (Technics SL-23.) It has power, but out of the blue I moved the needle arm over a record and the turntable wasn't turning. I lifted the turntable up and saw that the belt had fallen off. I replaced it, but no luck in fixing the problem. Any ideas? I'm trying to find a service manual, but no luck so far. Thanks for your time. Ivy

Howdy Ivy:

An Adobe PDF format service manual for the Technics SL-23 turntable can be downloaded from

http://www.servicemanuals.net/

for about $16.

Good luck!

Remove the turntable mat. Place the tonearm over the record, Through the 2" or close holes in the platter, you should be able to see if the motor pulley is turning, If it is, either the belt is bad, has fallen off, or the spindle bearing is frozen up. If you need more information, please visit my website at audioserviceclinic.com, and contact me there. Thank you.

You just need a new belt, they're around 20 bucks. Buy them in pairs, or threes.  They stretch out about every seven years.

There is a small belt which controls the auto function. Unfortunately, it is located underneath/inside the unit. This belt attaches to some gears, which enable the platter to start spinning when engaged. If the belt fell off, or if it is broken or damaged, the auto function will not work.

No service manuals exist for this unit, as they have been discontinued for over 10 years now.

Ok, I stand corrected. I guess you can get a service manual. How did we exist without the internet???

So, does your motor still spin? If your motor is not spinning, then your out of luck. If it's just the speed switch that's faulty, it should be a generic switch, and you could probably get from any electronics supply shop such as MOUSER.com

You can bypass it, so that it always plays 33, however a technician would need to wire that up for you.

Belt?

Wow, I didn't think anyone still had one. Now that I think about it, I may still have one somewhere myself. :)

The belt you need is a FM 24.5

You can order one for $10.00 at http://www.turntablebasics.com/belts/technics.html

It doesn't turn consistantly so when you are listening to a record it speeds up then slows dows in a pattern

If it is belt driven it might be either a motor problem or you might have a stiff spot in your belt.

Drive speed

There are no belts in the 1210 turntable. It is all driven by various Integrated Circuits (IC). These IC's tend to go bad over time. Unfortunately, it's not an easy fix, and you'll have to take it to an authorized service center for servicing.

All my vinyl sounds warped on turntable

Most common problem is the belt getting soft, especially if it has sat for a long time. It will get a weak spot where it sat on the drive pulley and every time the turntable goes around and hits that weak spot it will slow down a little making it sound like a warped album.

The belts are usually very easy to replace. Usually just lift off the turntable or there might be a small clip on the center pin, then it lifts off. Replacement belts can be ordered from several places, as shown in this search... http://www.google.com/search?&q=SL-B200+Technics+turntable+belt

Technics sl-1610 mk 2 turntable

Unfortunately, it does sound like a drive issue. Just so you know, these units are direct drive, so there is no physical motor. It's just a bunch of various circuits which drive the unit, and if any one of them go bad, it will affect your turntable speed. You will need to have this looked at by a service technician to determine which circuit is faulty.
