Downloading maps Attempting to down load German / Austrian / Switzerland map from Tomtom site has prove to be a nightmare !!!!! Can I get maps from elsewhere and if so how up to date are they and how do I load them without using the Tomtom 2.3 PC interface

The easiest way to get maps is through "TomTom Home" software that you should have installed in your computer. If you don't have it, install it from www.tomtom.com and start TomTom Home. Then plug the GPS docking station to a USB port on your computer and place your GPS on the docking station. Turn the GPS on. If you are asked if you want to connect your GPS to the computer, answer YES. After the GPS is recognized by TomTom Home, you'll get a set of icons on the window screen. One of them should be labeled "get maps". Click on it. Most of the time, only a few maps will be shown. To get access to all the maps you can buy, choose "ALL" from the drop down menu that says "Recommended". Map prices vary by region, but in the USA we can purchase a map that contains Germany and a handful of other adjacent countries for about $90 US dollars.

If you bought your TomTom brand new, the first time you installed the TomTom Home software, you may have received a message that a free map upgrade was available. If you did not receive that message, then either the unit is up to date, or it was not new.
You can check the version of map you're using by going to the TomTom Home software, and from the main menu, click the "More" button to get to page 2. From there, choose "Manage my ONE XL", and click on the "Items on Device" tab.
Click the "+" sign to the left of the word "Maps", then click the "More Info" link to discover the version of map you are using. The most current version (as of December 1, 2009) is 840.2568.
If that is not your version and you believe you're entitled to it, call TomTom technical support and state your case. Otherwise, if you want this version of map, you will need to purchase it.
When trying to load a new map onto your device, make sure you first run the backup routine (in TomTom Home) to back up the old map. After downloading a new map, but before it can be installed, you'll need to remove the old map, since there isn't enough room on the device to have both maps loaded simultaneously.

once map comes up tap map anywhere
tap on wrench icon to enter setup
tap on the triangle pointing right 5 times or until you see the three flag icon
tap on three flag icon english us should be 8 choices down

First you need to have the relivent map on your SD card. Typicly this will be the Tomtom Map " Western Europe ". When you purchase maps from TomTom you also get an activation code and instructions telling you how to install the map onto your device and how to authorise it using the code that comes with it.
Before doing anything ... BACK-UP your existing data ( the whole SD card ) onto your computer . This will ensure that if any update is unsuccesful you can at least return things to the way they were before you tried to update.
There are several ways to obtain maps

• buy a new TOMTOM SD card for your tomtom that containes the required maps. Make sure it comes with the authorisation card.
• buy a CD from TomTom or a TomTom authorised dealer . This CD will contain the required map so you can download the required map to your own SD card. Make sure it comes with the authorisation code AND instructions.
• buy the required map from TomTom online . You can download it to your PC , then copy it onto your SD card later. It will come with some instructions and authorisation code ...... You can also use "TomTom Home" software and this does most of the job of downloading maps ( that you buy from tomtom ) and puts them onto your sd card for you in a semi-automatic way . If you go down this route then its best to be sure you have the latest version of TomTom home software by going to the TomTom website first.
  

With ANY of the above methods------- BACK UP your existing SD card first . In fact ... make a BACK UP NOW , then if anything goes wrong at any time , you can at least revert back to your backup.

It was the first time I loaded uppdate maps (for free, because new navigator) and then it
was blocked with the message:no maps found, when trying to start it...My last try was to put
the navigator on his usb support and opening" TomTom HOME" program, connected to "map share"
and loaded some tips, removed it "safely" from the usb connection and it showed the right
view again...Puhhh. Thanks anyway, your site gived quite som motivation.

I would recommend you only do a map upgrade if you definatly need to as looking at other posts on this forum lots of people have problems after trying to update maps.
Updating maps is NOT FREE , you have to pay for updates and after downloading updates you need to reactivate the map with your product code . Only do an update after backing up your existing maps other sie you might have trouble reverting back if the download goes wrong.
