I am removing a Kohler engine from a simplicity lawn tractor. I was told that the govenor gear inside the engine is not working because the engine just started racing (RPM's) I check teh linkage and govenor linkage which seems to be attached. I was wondering what I have to take off the tractor and how many bolts hold the engine on the frame of the tractor. Thanks Bob

While there may be a governor, I doubt that is the problem.
It is more likely just the linkage to the carburetor.
And you don't have to take the engine out to get to the carb.
Take the air cleaner off, and examine the carb butterfly.
There is a choke fast idle cam that is probably not in the correct position.

ADJUST THE GOVENOR ON MY LT 155 John Deere lawn tractor

This should be Kawasaki engine; although, it could a Kohler. The IPL on this doesn't specify which engine it has. It would nice if it did where I could look the engine's service manual but the following should be what you need.

You place throttle in full throttle position. You need to watch the linkage at the governor shaft for which it turns as you go to full throttle then you would continue turning the governor shaft in that direction until it stops. From there you tighten the retaining bolt or nut and you should be good to go.

Simplicity riding mower with 16HP Kohler engine stalls after about 15 minutes. Acts like it isn't getting any fuel, but it will run again later.

I have seen this problem a few times and this may not be the solution however, check the fuel filter. It may have melted and partially closed off the fuel supply. The routing of the fuel hose will cause the inlet end to bend slightly if it gets too hot under the hood.

Simplicity lawn tractor problem

Check your fuel cap. If not venting properly, gas can be forced to places it shouldn't be. I also agree with carb over haul. If alot of gas in oil & alot of gas outta exhaust, lean towards carb issue.

Start the lawn mower and the motor revs real high.

1) This time of year with all the leaves and debris, a piece of debris might have found it's way around the outside of the carb and is caught in the throttle-butterfly linkages.
2) I have experienced the throttle butterfly screws being loose inside the throat of the carb
3) And the worse case senerio, the govenor gear inside the engine is broken.

*Check the easiest external things first, could just be debris.

Motor will not tun over

check to make sure the motor turns by hand, you may want to remove the sparg plug to make it a bit easier to turn, if it turns ok you may have stripped the gear on the starter or possibly the ringear
