Is your lock/unlock mechinism underneath in the unlock position?
I have a scanmaker 4800 and am assuming ours have basic similarities.
Mine has 2 round magnets that are visible when the glass is removed.
Once they fell out of place when I took it apart and I had to reglue them in. Is anything in the pathway of your carriage rail?(I don't know what else to call it) but a little wheel on the right side slides up and down this rail and maybe one of those little round magnets fell out and is blocking it.
I just downloaded the CD for my Microtek ScanMaker 4800 from Driverscollection.com. I'm sure you can either download the correct one from them for your scanner, but if not, try the 4800 version. It came complete with the driver and the controller software, though it might not have any third party software with it. Seems to me it was about 49MB in size. The filename was SW576bml.zip. Their file ID was 19703. Seems like a good site for driver downloads.
OK Just Stupid (G).... Open the lid, pull it up and off and you will see two screws below the hinges. If you have decided to purchase another scanner already, you are clear to proceed. Take these out, pry the halves apart until you hear a click. Push the upper section toward the control panel and the will come apart like a freshly caught oyster.
I would not only clean the inside of the glass, but would get a can of compressed air and blow the heck out of the area below the black thing. This should get most of the dust off of the mirrors (3).
I took mine apart and cleaned them, but, if you had problems opening the case, I definately would not try taking this assembly apart. It'll make you cuss.
