Toshiba 57H81 57" Rear Projection Television Logo
Anonymous Posted on Aug 17, 2010

I have a rear projection Toshiba 57" theatrewide - assembly date 2003, that during a storm took a hit. No power, no click, tested the fuse from the outside and it was good. Also tried to manually reset the TV using the recessed reset button on the front panel. I need to start with the boards and wondered if anyone can tell me what the usual culprit may be and I will start there. I am replacing the TV but love the picture and Dolby sound on the old girl and would like to salvage if at all possible.

Also, I would assume parts to be refurbed considering the age. Any recommendations on where to go on-line to find them and general costs?

Working from the point of view of the power cord, the first module that is generally encountered is the power supply. Search for a service manual, sometimes user manuals will also have a schematic, to help you troubleshoot the power supply section. If you are lucky, the power supply board will have the outputs stenciled on the PCB itself, making the task of verifying output voltages easier.

Can these be purchased relatively inexpensively, considering the age I would assume the boards and PS to be after market or refurbished? And where best to find these parts online

  • Sheldon Dedek Aug 17, 2010

Well, much depends on what exactly has failed, and how it has failed. Most boards in a TV chassis are manufacturer specific, which adds to the cost. If the board has failed in a simple way, such as a specific component failure , then it may be feasible to just replace that particular component after verifying everything else is in order.

As far as sourcing replacement parts, try ebay and searching for tv model #, as well as any markings on the boards themselves. Its amazing what is to be found on ebay.

The tv seems really dark.57in theatrewide hd toshiba

Go into the tv menu and select the Preferences menu and set your picutre preference from Theater to Normal. The TV is currently in Theater mode, wich is for viewing with no lights on in the room. Switching it to normal lightens the pictue a lot.

Toshiba 56PW8 rear projection - lost sound and picture after powercut

The convergence amps in those units consist of two Sanyo STK392-110 Ic's that get hot enough to fry eggs.. If your storm flexed voltages enough it could have easily shorted the amps and/or take either of two pico fuses in the 24v supply line to the amps... If you're not too tech savy this is one for a reliable shop and not and expensive fix. Two Sanyo Ics and a couple pico fuses should be more than $50.00 dollars and a couple hours of labor to put them in... While they're at it have them check the caps in the hyper module and for any ring cracks in the deflection circuit...
