I have a Dell Inspiron 1545, this is a brand new computer I just purchased it about a moth ago. I use a program called skype and I use the video chat option. Skype gives me an error message that says "Skype can't detect your webcam". My webcam is built in to the computer so i don't understand. When I open the program "Dell webcam central" it says please plug in a webcam.

Check in your Device Manager from the Control Panel. Look for the WebCam under Imaging Devices. Delete it and allow the system to reinstall it by using Scan For New Hardware. If it's detected, open a browser and go to TestMyCam.com (yes, it's safe). If you have video there and not in Skype, remove and reinstall Skype. If it's not redetected in the Device Manager, it's likely broken (yep, they do break).

If you own a web camera or if your Dell computer comes with a built-in web camera, you can complete a video conference on your computer.
There are a variety of free chat programs that provide free video messaging such as Skype, Yahoo Messenger or Google Chat.
With these programs, all you will need to do a video conference is add the person you wish to conference with to your buddy list.

Download and install a messaging software program such as Skype, Yahoo or Google Chat if you do not already have one installed on your Dell computer.
No matter which messaging program you use, the video call or conferencing feature works the same.
Launch the messaging software on your Dell computer.
Click on your buddy list or contact list.


Click on the contact with whom you'd like to video conference.
If he isn't one of your contacts, you will need to add him to your messenger contact list by clicking on "New" and then "New Contact."

Click on the contact name and select "Video Call."
You will now have a video conference call on your Dell computer.

If you purchased it new, you should be able to get the keyboard replaced under warranty. Dell's come with a minimum 1-year warranty. Give them a call and tell them the issue with the spacebar.

If you're doing video chat with someone using messenger programs like Yahoo or Skype, it is normal to see a smaller version of yourself in the video chat screen. This is working as it is intended to. If it happens when using just your webcam software, try reinstalling it or check if it has a setting to disable the smaller version of your system. Hope this proves to be useful.

At less than 1 month old, this is a potential warranty call. Installing questionably safe software could have caused this problem too.
If you haven't had it long enough to accumulate a great amount of valuable data on the hard drive, you could simply try to do a factory restore with the restore disks that shipped with the computer or by holding down a key at start-up to launch a built in restore program. (the key options should be displayed on your screen during start-up)

If you have forgotten your BIOS or Hard Drive Password for this model, there is a master code that you can obtain from Dell Support. Simply call, Email, or use Online Chat from http://support.dell.com and give them your Service Tag, and they can help you out from there. If it is a Windows profile password you have forgotton, try accessing the Administrator account from Safe Mode (Press F8 at startup), and remove the password for the user account from Control Panel, User Accounts.
