My gas cooktop is making a regular cracking sound - like every 10 seconds. I had washed the control tops and put them back on - but that is the only thing...

If you wipe over the control panel while the hob is switched on, settings may be changed. To avoid this, the hob has a function you can use to lock the control panel for cleaning. To activate: Remove the twist knob. An audible signal sounds. The ? indicator and the hob settings flash. The control panel is locked for 10 minutes. You can now wipe over the surface of the control panel without altering the settings.
To deactivate: Put the twist knob back on within 10 minutes. The control panel is unlocked. To end the function early, put the twist knob back on before the 10 minutes have elapsed.
Here is a disassembly video. A loose knob problem can be tackled by pulling off the knob, encircling the cracked plastic with a zip tie (after putting Loctite glue in the cracks), pulling the zip tight. Don't lose the sleeve when you pull off the knob. But if this is not working for your setup, here is the disassembly, not your model but maybe useful: https://www.google.com/search?q=whirlpool+gas+top+disassembly
take out the control knobs. clean the grease and food partilcles if any using hot water and dish washing liquid .if the washer under the knob is stuck, put it properly and put the control knobs back into it carefully

A small crack, turns into a big crack, Short of ordering a new piece of glass, there is no "fix" sorry. YOu can continue to use it, but eventually it will run across the cook top, and then shatter the glass... Better be safe than sorry.
The cooktop box has a metal flange. Make sure the cooktop when dropped into the countertop is resting on ther metal flange and not the glass edge by itself. If it rests on the glass alone the weight will cause the glass to crack at some point in time.
