I have a Garmin Nuvi 260 that has been working well until recently. When we try to charge it using the car adapter, it is displaying the connected to pc icon. Has anyone else had this problem? How do we fix it? How can we charge our garmin?
Thanks in advance for the help,
Jen

If a wall powered charger is used it could be bad or the connection from it to the unit damaged---happens if the charger is connected/disconnected a lot----same thing can happen if using the lighter plug adapter for charging.
The proper vehicle power cables for the Garmin nuvi 260 are part numbers 010-10723-06 or 010-11478-03. The use of improper cables will cause the nuvi to go into mass storage. You may also want to contact Garmin Support for assistance. http://www.garmin.com/us/support/contact
Garmin Support has stated that a fully discharged battery can only be recharged from a computer USB connection, i.e. car 12V and AC adapter do not work. Make sure that your USB computer cable has a true mini-USB connector which conforms to the USB standard, i.e. with a 5-pin connector. There are cheap cables available in many stores which do not conform to the USB standard and have only 4 pins - look for the official USB logo on the packaging to be sure that you get the 5-pin connection.
Note also that a computer USB connection is only a trickle charge, with 500mA available at best, if no other devices are attached to the same USB Root Hub, so leave it connected for 2-3 hours to be sure.

Good explanation you gave. More than most do. Make sure you have the latest nuvi "Firmware" then update the maps. I would start with making sure you have the latest WebUpdater on your computer before you proceed with any updates.
If a nuvi 200 is has an older version of
system software glitches may occur. The device may be missing letters
or have jumbled letters or displaying duplicate letters or strange symbols on
the address screen. To correct this you will need to update the system software
of your nuvi. You can easily do this by using Garmin’s WebUpdater
program:
After the program has been installed it should run
automatically. If it does not please use the steps below. To run WebUpdater:
From the Start menu,
click All Programs and find the Garmin folder
Click WebUpdater
Connect your nuvi
to an available USB port on your
computer
To search for an
available update, choose NEXT
As the program
automatically finds updates, choose NEXT to load the update. Once the
update is complete, you can search for other updates such as voice
languages, Bluetooth, and Traffic Receiver.
Disconnect the unit to
ensure it powers on.
Take your unit outdoors and keep it in a
stationary position with an open sky view until it reacquires satellites.
HI,
I have the problem solved I at first had this problem after about 5 minutes of messing with my GARMINNUVI and having many electronic gadget I thought about diffrent buttons to hit at the same time heres how you charge your NUVI with a computer and a usb cable
1st: make sure your NUVI is OFF then plug in the usb cable from the computer to the NUVI, after you hear your computer ding from new device connected, and the NUVI displays the computer icon move to step 2
step 2: if you have xp go to START and MY COMPUTER. with vista its START then COMPUTER button on the right side
step 3: with MY COMPUTER window open hold the NUVI power switch to the ON position and RIGHT CLICK the NUVI device logo (blue triangle) and select EJECT .. ( DON;T HIT SAFiLY REMOVE)
step 4: when you see GARMIN display on the screen you can letgo of the power button on the NUVI ****** if you unplugtheusb it will display message stating EXTERNAL POWER LOST SWITCHING TO BATTERY POWER***** while it is plugged to the computer the battery meter will disaper
Based on your description, you are doing it right. You said.... "when i connect it to the car charger it shows the computer sysmbol and starts charging. there is no other usb port on the device" That is correct. It takes about 2-3 hours to fully charge a low battery. There is only a mini USB port on a 260. It's used for charging and downloading updates of software or maps.
