If you know how to open the machines and can gain access to the internal terminals and you have any kind of meter with Ohms function, check from each side of AC plug to the terminals inside the machine, obviously, with nothing plugged into the wall.
You should have readings of less than 2-3 ohms for each line and it should be even less.

Then place the switch in the 'on' position (STILL NOT PLUGGED IN!) and measure across the internal terminals.
Depending on the motor and condition of the brushes, you should measure resistance from somewhere between a few ohms to perhaps a 100+ ohms.
If it measures much higher, either the brushes are no longer contacting or a motor winding is open.
The latter case would likely make the machines worthless since most manufacturers will charge way too much for a replacment motor to make it worthwhile.

Remember to avoid having anything plugged into the wall since the procedures described do not require it.

I can run my dc17 to clean my floors but when I put it upright to use the wand it turns off

I called Dyson and they walked me thru the process of making sure nothing was blocking the airflow and suction. Everything seemed fine (not blocked). We couldn't figure out anything on the phone and I was still having the same problem.

Trying to figure out the solution, I removed (entirely) the filter that you're supposed to clean every 6 months and ran the vacuum (I cleaned this filter 2 months ago). It worked! I cleaned the filter (again!) and let the vacuum run and it seemed fine.

I can understand why they won't instruct you to completely remove the filter but it would save a lot of time if they just had you check ALL the options.

I hope this helps!

I have a brand new KitchenAid mixer that is 5 years old and never used. I unpacked it this morning and it won't turn on, no noise, no movement, nothing. Help.

Please check manually the motor and see if it moves freely. Now make sure that the power plug and the connections to the switch are not tampered , check the continuity of the plug to the switch and to the motors.
If you notice any dirt or insects make sure that this has not clogged on the motor. If so clean using a degreasing spray- WD40- would be recommended.
If the motor is tight , lightly oil or degrease using the spray while manually rotating.
Once this is done connect the power while taking all precaution. Use the meter to check the flow of the circuit to the switch and to the motor. If there is a trip switch see that it is reset.
If there is power to the motor and still it does not work the brushes might be dirty and might need a cleaning/ reset.

Seems to be picking up dirt but not very well & there is nothing in the canister to empty.

more that likely the top filter is clogged. step one. remove the clear plastic dirt holder. step two. reach inside the upper dlear jug, still attached to the unit and twist the large disc you see counter clockwise about a 1/4 turn. pull it down and it should be covered in dirt. clean and wash out the filter and your machine should work like new. If this doesn't help let me know what you see. If it does , please rate this answer. thanks

Belt keeps breaking.

your brush roller isn't turning unplug the vacuum and see if you can turn the brush roller and also notice if it turns freely or is it stiff, take the roller out and remove strings, carpet strands and hair.if you can pull the ends off clean the ends good and maybe add just a little drop of machine oil on the bearing on the inside the roller where the bearings are.clean the motor shaft.there is probably old burnt rubber on the motor shaft.you can use a pice of emery cloth ,clean it till you see the polished finish .but i would say your problem is in the brush roller and the motor shaft.i hope i was some help to you.can you please leave some feedback

Cleaning filter on the Dyson Slim

You don't have to clean the HEPA filter (underneath the canister in that clear part) - if you break that clear part you will cause damage to the machine and it won't **** anymore as the air will escape. There is no need to remove it or replace it, it is a lifetime filter. You only have to clean the blue filter that is inside the top of the canister/dirt bin.

I am wondering how I can clean the inside of my Bissell Spotlifter Powerbrush hand held cleaner. I want to clean the part where you suction up - it is full of gunk and hair and I can't figure out if it comes apart or not so I can clean it. Can you help?

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
Normally on the Bissell Spotlifter Powerbrush the item will comes apart from the sides into 2 halves and then you can either clean out or blow out the inside of the
Bissell Spotlifter Powerbrush, also you can take a wire coat hanger and straighten it out and bend a hook @ the end of the wire hanger and you can use the hook to pull out the clog or whatever is blocking the opening and you can also use a blower or an old tooth brush to clean the motor or to brush it off.
Always, check with your local vac dealer. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
