I have Whirlpool model # GS5SHAXNL00 with different problems, first the compressor fan was stuck by a bended cardboard. Now, the fan is working but its not cooling and every time I open the fridge door (not the freezer side) the fan stops working. I have to unplugged it and plug it again. If I leave the refrigerator for a while I can hear several click sounds and a high-pitched ringing sound followed by two click sounds. Please, if anyone can help me I will greatly appreciate. Thanks

SOURCE: Whirlpool refrigerator side x side doors make a

The door closing cams were worn on both doors. I had to buy a cam kit that cost about $10.00 and had the parts for both doors in it, take off the doors, and replace the cams. Before taking off the door that has an ice and water dispenser, I had to turn off the water to the fridge, take off the front grill, and disconnect the water tube that goes into the door (as the tube is threaded through the door cam). After replacing the door closing cams and reassembling, there is no longer a popping sound.

SOURCE: Freezer not freezing, refrigerator warm, hear clicking sound

The overload/relay on the compressor is shorted . This is the piece with 2 or 3 wires connected to it , mounted on the compressor . The part # you need is 8201786 . Complete mounting instructions , come with this kit . Easily replaceable .

These models have two fans. One is located inside the unit. The fan inside blows air across the cooling coils. With the door open this fan is usually running other than defrost cycle. If this fan has stopped it will cause the compressor to overheat and the relay will cycle.

The second fan equally as important is located under a fiberboard cover accessible from the back of the unit at the bottom. This fan is usually noticeable by an air flow sound. Usually air flow is detectable out of the front grill. If this fan fails to operate, blocked due to a major build up of lint the compressor will overheat and cycle as you hear,

Hope this helps?

If it's not running when the compressor runs it will cause the problem you describe. You will need to remove the cardboard backing on the back of the fridge to access the fan.

I have an ED22TEXHW00 model side by side that is running but I noticed ice was melting and the food at the bottom of the freezer was thawed. I took off the cardboard at the bottom, fan is running...

That is a sign the compressor is having trouble starting. Most time checking the compressor and start component to find which part needs replaced will resolve the problem. Your model came with two different styles of start relays and a start capacitor so it might be better that you look at the ones your model has and if you like take the capacitor to your local refrigeration parts dealer and have the test and or replace it for you. Anytime I run into this I always test the compressor windings to be sure before purchasing parts if the compressor is stable enough for new parts. Sometimes the compressor is the problem. I will send you to a link here shortly that tells you how to test a compressor and a link for parts if you should need. Thanks, Sea Breeze

Fridge working off/on

If the noise was coming from the compressor when it was cutting off or starting, it was the internal mounts of the compressor and the compressor will have to be replaced. If the noise was a fan, it may have stopped. One is in the freezer behind the rear cover and one is underneath where the compressor is behind the cardboard cover.

1991 Whirlpool M/N ET18RKXYW00 refrigerator w/icebox no longer keeps items cold. Selector controls are maxed out. I know I'm pushing it as far as the age of the fridge, but we store our water, pop, etc....

the condenser fan motor is probably the cause of the failure. is this unit in the garage? if so, mice have figured out the defrost pan is a good source of water and have either gotten there heads stuck in fan blade or have chewed the wires going to the fan motor. there is a cardboard cover over the compressor and condenser motor behind unit. remove it and check it out!

The light and digital controls on the refrigerator side dont work

I replaced a circuit board that is in the white box at the lower left rear of the fridge. You will need to remove the cardboard cover, then there is two screws to loosen the box. The circuit board is inside. There is a white tab that sticks up push it sideways and it will pop right out. Put the plugs in the new board and pop it back in and put everything back together. Be sure the wires are routed so they do not contact the compressor.
If you want to test it first get a voltmeter one probe to CN1, the white wire, and the other to CN2, yellow wire with red stripe, there should be 120 volts. If not, or when the door is open it drops replace the board.
I did not have a voltmeter but it seems everybody that had a problem the fridge was 4 to 5 years old. So I bit the bullet, around $90.00, and replaced it and it works!
